# Do I Need a Motorcycle Licence to Rent a Scooter in Phuket?

Page URL: https://kolesio.com/en/faq/do-i-need-a-motorcycle-licence-to-rent-a-scooter-in-phuket/

Yes: to ride a scooter in Phuket legally and insured you need category A, the motorcycle category, open on your national licence and on your International Driving Permit, because a car licence (category B) does not cover any scooter, however small. The IDP only extends what your national licence already covers and cannot open a category on its own. If your licence shows only category B, the scooter drops out of the plan and a car becomes the legal way to drive yourself around the island.

## In short

- Category A — must be open on your licence and your IDP for any scooter
- B is not enough — a car licence does not cover two wheels, the most common mistake
- Issued at home — an IDP cannot be arranged in Thailand, and neither can a category
- Helmet — compulsory for rider and passenger, fastened

## Does a car licence cover a scooter in Thailand?

No. This is the mistake we see most often at the door: someone holds a perfectly good car licence, an IDP to match, and is sure it covers a small scooter, because in some countries a small scooter rides on a car licence. In Thailand it does. Category B is a passenger car, category A is a motorcycle or scooter, and the police and the insurer read them exactly that way.

How do you check? Open your International Driving Permit on the page of pictograms. The categories that are open are marked there; if the motorcycle symbol is stamped, you are fine. If only the car is, you are not, and no amount of explaining at a checkpoint changes that.

### What riding without it costs

Two things. At a document check it is treated as riding without a licence, which means a fine, and on this island scooters are stopped regularly, especially at the roads out of the beach areas. In an accident the insurance does not apply: repairs, other people's property and medical treatment fall on you, and many travel policies exclude riding without the right category outright.

## What that means for the car

If category A is missing, a car solves the licence question in one move. A car needs category B, which you already have, plus the IDP and your passport, and it keeps you out of the rain and off the ground on the hill roads.

Every car we deliver is automatic, so the controls are as simple as a scooter's, and an economy car parks almost as easily in the beach streets. For two people travelling light it is the closest thing to a scooter you can drive legally on a car licence.

If you do hold category A, a scooter can make sense for one or two confident riders travelling light. We bring it to your hotel, villa or apartment anywhere on the island, helmets included; the scooter rental page covers who it suits.

For a car, we deliver to arrivals, your hotel, villa or apartment at any hour: automatic, first-class commercial insurance, refundable deposit of 5,000–30,000 ฿, depending on the model, the total for your dates fixed in chat. Send the dates in the chat or through the booking form.

## Step by step: before you book a scooter

All of this happens at home, before the flight. Nothing on the list can be fixed after landing.

- Look at your national licence — category A must already be open on it
- Get the IDP from the country that issued your licence — it cannot be arranged in Thailand
- Check the pictogram page of the IDP — the motorcycle category has to be marked there too
- Carry the licence, IDP and passport on every ride — the IDP is void without the national licence
- Wear a fastened helmet, rider and passenger — fines are handed out regularly
- Check your travel insurance wording — many policies exclude riding without category A

> Riding a scooter on a car-only licence is, for the police and the insurer, riding without a licence. A crash then leaves every cost with you, including the treatment of anyone injured, so if the motorcycle category is missing, take a car instead.

## What about ASEAN licences?

Drivers from Malaysia, Singapore and the other ASEAN members use their own licence in Thailand under the ASEAN agreement, and the same category logic applies: the motorcycle category has to be on the card for a scooter. If the card has no English on it, carry an IDP or a certified translation as well. ASEAN driving licences explains the agreement country by country.

## What about a proper motorcycle?

Same category, stricter use. A motorcycle with a manual clutch is rented in Phuket for the passes and for long runs to the mainland, and category A is required for it exactly as strictly as anywhere in Europe. The passes from Kathu to Patong and the road towards Khao Lak are where it earns its keep.

Ride it in a full-face helmet rather than the thin beach shell with a strap under the chin. On the left side of the road, the first right turn is where old habits fight back. For short errands between the beach and the market, an ordinary scooter does the same job with less fuss.

## Scooter or car for a first visit?

A car, for most first visits. Rain, hills, children and bags all push the same way, and so does the licence question. Rent a car or a scooter in Phuket compares the two side by side, and the foreign licence rules page lists what each country needs.

A scooter earns its place later, for someone who already rides at home, holds category A and wants to hop between two beaches in dry weather. Then it is quick and easy to park, as long as the helmet is on and the documents are in your pocket.

## FAQ

### Do I need a motorcycle licence to rent a scooter in Phuket?

Yes. Category A has to be open on your national licence and on your IDP, because a car licence does not cover any scooter in Thailand.

### Does an International Driving Permit cover a scooter?

Only if the motorcycle category is marked on its pictogram page. The IDP copies the categories of your national licence and cannot add one.

### Can I get a motorcycle licence or IDP in Phuket?

Not the IDP: it is issued by the country that issued your licence, before you travel. A missing category cannot be opened from Thailand either.

### What happens if I ride without category A?

At a police check it counts as riding without a licence and you are fined. After an accident the insurance does not apply, and the costs are yours.

### Is a helmet required on a scooter in Phuket?

Yes, for the rider and the passenger, fastened. Riding without one is also a common reason for insurers to refuse a claim.

### What can I rent in Phuket with only a car licence?

A car. Category B plus an IDP and your passport covers every car we deliver, all of them automatic.
