# Can I Drive in Phuket with a US Licence?

Page URL: https://kolesio.com/en/faq/us-driving-licence-in-thailand/

Yes, you can drive in Phuket on a US state driver's license, as long as you carry an International Driving Permit issued by AAA and your passport alongside it. The bigger adjustment is not the paperwork but the road itself: traffic keeps to the left and the steering wheel sits on the right.

## In short

- AAA — where Americans get the IDP, before the trip
- Left-hand traffic — the opposite side of the road to the US

## Short answer

Thailand reads a US license through the IDP. Your state license shows who you are and what you may drive, the permit restates it in the internationally recognised format, and the passport links both to you. At a police checkpoint and at our handover, all three are asked for together.

### Getting the permit from AAA

In the United States the permit is issued by AAA, and it has to be done at home: nobody in Phuket can issue one against an American license. Make sure the license itself stays valid for the whole stay, because the IDP only counts while it sits next to a valid license.

### The real change: the other side of the road

For an American driver the documents are the easy part. The hard part is sitting on the right and keeping the car to the left of the road. Turns are the classic trap: a right turn now crosses oncoming traffic, a left turn is the short one, and the instinct after any turn is to drift into the right-hand lane.

## What that means for the car

This is where an automatic car earns its place. With no gear lever to find with the left hand, your attention stays on lane position, the mirrors and the traffic around you. Take the first drive in daylight on a quiet road before heading into town.

Scooters are the second adjustment. They pass on both sides, gather at the front at red lights and turn with little warning, so leave space and check the left mirror before every turn. Our page on left-hand driving goes through these habits in more detail.

Parking is the other place where the switch shows. Reversing into a bay with the wheel on the right changes which mirror does the work, and pulling out of a bay is when drivers most often head for the wrong side. Stop, remember that the near lane now carries traffic coming from your right, and only then join it.

A second driver joins the agreement in advance with the same license, IDP and passport. If someone who is not listed drives, the insurance is void; the page what insurance is included sets out where the cover begins and ends.

After a long flight from the US, we can have the car waiting at arrivals or bring it to your hotel, villa or apartment, night arrivals included: automatic, first-class commercial insurance, refundable deposit, the total for your dates fixed in chat. Send the dates on WhatsApp or use the booking form; car rental in Phuket is explained on the main page.

## Step by step

The paperwork is an errand at home. The driving adjustment happens on the first drive, and a little planning makes it calm.

- Get the IDP from AAA before you fly — it is not issued in Thailand
- Check the license stays valid for the whole trip — the permit is void without it
- Keep license, IDP and passport in one place — they are asked for as a set
- List every driver in the booking chat — each needs the same three documents
- Inspect the car with us on delivery — body, tyres, air conditioning and fuel level are recorded
- Say keep left to yourself at each turn on day one — the home habit returns at empty junctions
- Match the fuel to the sticker by the filler flap — the wrong fuel is paid for separately

## Common mistakes

American drivers usually arrive with the documents sorted and underestimate the switch of sides.

The first mistake is pulling out of a car park or petrol station onto the right side of the road, which happens exactly when there is no other traffic to follow. The second is turning right into the nearest lane instead of crossing to the far left one. The third is judging the left edge of the car: sitting on the right, drivers tend to hug the kerb and clip mirrors, or squeeze a scooter. A fourth is paperwork: the license left in the hotel safe and only the IDP in the car, which on its own is not a license. Travelling with someone from another country? Where to get an IDP is listed country by country.

> Driving without the license on you, or letting an unlisted friend take the wheel, voids the insurance. A scrape at a junction then turns into a repair bill paid by the driver.

## Related questions

### Can I drive in Thailand with a US license only?

Not as a visitor: the IDP has to come with it. The general picture for all countries is on the page do I need an IDP to rent a car in Phuket, and our driving licence rules page covers the checks in more detail.

### Can I get an IDP after landing in Phuket?

No. It is issued by AAA in the US before the trip. Without it, taxis and Grab are the fallback, or a listed driver with the full set of documents can drive. The deposit side of the booking is explained on the page how the deposit works.

## What the US State Department says

The State Department's country page for Thailand on travel.state.gov says an International Driving Permit is required to drive a car or motorcycle in Thailand. A US license alone is not enough, so the two travel together.

travel.state.gov names two issuers of the permit in the United States: AAA and the American Automobile Touring Alliance (AATA). Apply through one of them before the trip, because nobody in Thailand can issue the permit or replace a lost one.
