# Chalong to Kata by Car

From the Chalong roundabout, take the highway towards Kata: a couple of kilometres on you pass the Big Buddha turning, and the road carries on over the hills into Kata. It is a short run, but at rush hour the roundabout stands still and on the hills the first tour bus sets the pace for everyone.

## In short

- A couple of km — from the Chalong roundabout to the Big Buddha turning on the Kata highway
- Hills — the road into Kata winds between them with nowhere to overtake
- After four — when to try Kata Noi if you missed the early morning window
- Any hour — delivery to your hotel, villa or apartment in Chalong, day or night

## Which road and how long it feels

Start at the Chalong roundabout, the knot where traffic to Rawai, Kata, Phuket Town and the north all meets, and take the exit for the highway towards Kata. A couple of kilometres on, a road branches right and up to the Big Buddha. Stay on the highway and it carries on towards Kata, hilly but much simpler than the climb to the statue.

### How long it feels

We have not timed Chalong to Kata, so we give no figure: it is a short run over the hills. What stretches it is traffic, not distance. At rush hour the Chalong roundabout stands still, and on the hill road into Kata the pace belongs to the first lorry or tour bus, because there is nowhere to overtake.

Before the hills, the main roads around Chalong have petrol stations, tyre shops, garages and supermarkets. It is the easy place to fill up on the way to the beach.

## What that means for the car

The hills set the rules. The road winds, there is nowhere to overtake, and some stretches you will spend behind a tour bus. An automatic makes that easy: no clutch on the stop-start climbs, and the low range on the selector on the way down.

Kata itself decides the size. Its streets are narrow with scooters parked on both sides, and the size of the car matters more here than in neighbouring Karon. A compact slips through where a bigger car waits, and parking cameras or sensors are genuinely useful when you reverse into a gap between two bikes.

Do not fight the bus. Stay back far enough to see past it on the bends and accept its pace to the top.

If you are based in Chalong and want Kata for beach days, we can bring a compact automatic to your hotel, villa or apartment at any hour: first-class commercial insurance, a refundable deposit, the total for your dates fixed in chat. Send the dates on WhatsApp or through the booking form; the page on car rental in Chalong explains the district.

## The Chalong roundabout, step by step

Every trip from Chalong to Kata starts here, and so does every trip back. The roundabout gathers traffic heading to Rawai, Kata, Phuket Town and the north, and at rush hour it stops altogether. Outside those hours it moves, as long as you know your exit before you arrive.

Wat Chalong stands on a busy road a little north of the roundabout, so it is close without being on the way to Kata. Go through the gate straight over the kerb, and rejoin the road carefully, because bikes sit in the blind spot. The page on Wat Chalong by car has more.

- Pick your exit before the approach — changing your mind on the roundabout is how cars get hit
- Give way to traffic already on the roundabout — it has priority
- Check both mirrors before every lane change — scooters pass on both sides
- Avoid rush hour if you can — that is when the roundabout stands still

> Scooters pass on both sides of a car on the Chalong roundabout. Before you turn off, check the mirror on the exit side and look over your shoulder: a bike in the blind spot is the one the mirror misses.

## Where to park in Kata

Free spaces by the beach are few, and in high season they go from early morning. The main supply is the bays along the street running inland from the beach and the big hotel car parks. The strategy that works is to park once and walk, rather than circling the narrow streets for something closer.

Kata Noi, the smaller bay behind the headland, is tighter still: one small bay and one road lined with hotel guests' cars. Arrive early in the morning or after four. When it is full, turn back over the headland instead of squeezing a car onto the verge. The page on car rental in Kata covers the district in more detail.

## The way back to Chalong

Kata's traffic runs on a daily rhythm. In the morning it leaves downhill and east, towards the main road and Chalong; in the evening it comes back up. Everything far from Kata goes out the same eastern exit, so setting off half an hour earlier saves more than any detour.

### Kata to Chalong Pier in the morning

Heading for a boat, go out by the eastern exit, down to the Chalong roundabout, then take the straight road from the Chalong junction to the water, a few minutes in daytime. Leave early, because the morning flow out of Kata is going your way. More on driving to Chalong Pier.

Coming from Chalong in the evening, the roundabout at rush hour is the slow point, then the climb into Kata with everyone else returning. The Big Buddha turning branches right a couple of kilometres after the roundabout; the sign is small, so move into the right-hand lane early. The climb to the statue is ten minutes of winding road, with fuel stations at the bottom by the turning. See the Big Buddha by car, and for other districts start from car rental in Phuket.
