# Chalong to Rawai by Car in Phuket

Chalong to Rawai is about 15 min by car, a flat run south from the Chalong roundabout to the seafront at the southern tip of Phuket. Parking in Rawai is free along the seafront, and from there Nai Harn and Ya Nui beaches are another 10 min. The only thing that stretches the trip is the Chalong roundabout at rush hour, when it stands still and the first minutes of the drive are spent waiting to get out of it.

## In short

- 15 min — from Chalong to the Rawai seafront on a flat road
- Free parking — a long row of spaces along the Rawai seafront
- 10 min — on from Rawai to Nai Harn and Ya Nui beach
- Rawai pier — boats to Coral and Racha leave from Rawai itself

## How long is the drive from Chalong to Rawai?

Fifteen minutes on a normal day. It is one of the shortest and easiest drives in the south.

From the Chalong roundabout you head south, the road stays flat all the way, and you reach the Rawai seafront without a single climb or hairpin. The towns run into each other along the route, with shops, cafes and petrol stations on both sides, so there is nothing to get lost on and no stretch where you feel far from help.

### When does it take longer?

At the start, not at the end. At rush hour the Chalong roundabout stands still, and getting out of it towards Rawai can take as long as the rest of the drive. Mornings around the pier are busy as well, when the boat groups head for the water. Leave a little later, or plan the trip for the middle of the day, and the fifteen minutes hold.

If you are staying in Chalong or Rawai and want a car for these short runs and the southern beaches, we deliver it to your hotel or villa at any hour: automatic, first-class commercial insurance, refundable deposit, and the total for your dates agreed in the chat.

## What that means for the car

Almost any car does this drive well. Chalong and Rawai are flat, the everyday distances are short, and parking in Rawai is easy, so an economy automatic is the natural choice for a couple or a small family.

A bigger car earns its keep only if your days go beyond Rawai. The road on to Nai Harn and Promthep climbs out of the flat and comes down on bends, and a villa on the hills around Nai Harn may have a steep ramp. For a stay spent between Chalong, the pier and the Rawai seafront, the smaller class is simply easier.

The automatic helps on this route more than you would think, because the stop-start traffic around the roundabout at peak hours is the most tiring part of the whole drive.

- Couple or small family — economy automatic, the easy choice
- Villa on a slope near Nai Harn — crossover, for the ramp
- Early boat from Chalong Pier — leave before the pier rush
- Evening at the fish market — arrive early for a seafront space

## Where to park in Rawai

On the seafront. Rawai has a long row of free spaces along the water, and on most days you park within sight of where you are going.

The exception is the evening, when the seafront fills up around the fish market and the restaurants along it. Come before dark, or park a street back and walk the last part. Rawai has no swimming beach of its own, so for the sea you drive on to Nai Harn or Ya Nui, 10 minutes further.

> Do not stop on the road in front of the fish market to unload or wait for a space. The seafront is busy in the evening, traffic comes from both directions, and a stationary car in the lane is the fastest way to a scraped door or a fine.

## What is there to do in Rawai by car?

Three things, mostly. The pier, where boats to Coral and Racha leave from Rawai itself; the Sea Gypsy village by the seafront; and the fish market in the evening, where you pick the catch and have it cooked nearby.

Beyond Rawai, the car opens up the tip of the island. Nai Harn and Ya Nui are 10 minutes away, and Promthep Cape, the sunset point with the largest car park and the biggest crowd, is close by. For the sunset there, arrive an hour before, when there is still a real space to be had.

The detailed guide to the village and its parking is Sea Gypsy Village by car, and for the whole district, see car rental in Rawai.

## From the airport and back

Chalong is about 30 min from Phuket Airport on the direct highway, and Rawai about 45 min on the east road through Chalong. If you land at night, we meet you in arrivals with the car; the drive south is on lit main roads until the last few minutes.

On the way back to a flight, the Chalong roundabout is the one place to allow extra time. The full route is laid out in Phuket Airport to Rawai by car.

Returning the car at the airport works from both districts. The drop-off is arranged in the chat against your flight time, and the return inspection is the same walk round the car as at handover, so leave room for it before check-in rather than arriving at the last minute.

## Staying in Rawai for a month

If this drive is part of a long stay, monthly car rental in Rawai fixes the whole month as one total in the chat, with the car delivered to the house.
