# Kata to Nai Harn by Car

Kata to Nai Harn is 15 min by car on the winding southern road, past the viewpoint above Kata Noi and down into the bay. After sunset, when everyone who watched it leaves at once, the same road turns slow and dark, and the time no longer holds.

## In short

- 15 min — Kata to Nai Harn on the winding road through the hills
- 20 min — allow this for the run from Kata to Promthep Cape and Nai Harn
- 2 ways out — of Nai Harn, both over hills: north to Kata, east through Rawai
- Under trees — the large free parking area at Nai Harn, shade gone by ten in high season

## How long it takes and which road

The drive is 15 min on the winding road south from Kata. Kata Noi is cut off by a hill, so the road leaves on a gradient, climbs, drops and climbs again. Near the top you pass the viewpoint above the bay, then descend into Nai Harn. If Promthep Cape is on the plan too, allow twenty minutes for the run to the cape and the beach.

### A beautiful road, and a narrow one

The asphalt is good. The width is the issue: in places there is barely room for two cars, and several bends are sharp enough to hide what is coming. This is the most scenic and the most demanding road on the island, and it rewards a steady pace more than a quick one.

There is a second way into the bay, from the east through Rawai and Chalong. It is flatter, wider and calmer, but it is longer. Keep it for the drive back in rain or in the dark.

## What that means for the car

Narrow and bendy points to an automatic. On a gradient you will stop behind a scooter or a van coming the other way, and a hill start without a clutch is one less thing to think about. On the descents, the low range on the selector saves the brakes.

An economy hatchback copes with this road: the climbs are short and the surface is good. A crossover sits higher and gives a better view over the bends, which helps where you want to see the next car early. Power matters less than width here; you want a car narrow enough to tuck in when the road pinches.

There is no convenient petrol station in the Nai Harn bay. The nearest are in Rawai and towards Chalong, so leave Kata with enough in the tank for the round trip.

If you are staying in Kata and want the southern beaches within reach, we can bring an automatic to your hotel, villa or apartment at any hour: first-class commercial insurance, a refundable deposit, the total for your dates fixed in chat. Send the dates on WhatsApp or use the booking form; the page on car rental in Kata covers the district itself.

## The winding road, step by step

The road is short, and most of the difficulty sits in three places: the gradient out of Kata Noi, the sharp bends near the top and the viewpoint pull-in. Each is easy in daylight at a steady pace, and each gets harder after dark, when the whole beach heads home at once.

The viewpoint is a small pull-in, not a car park. If it is full, drive on, turn around somewhere sensible and come back. Stopping on the carriageway is the one thing not to do. Our page on Phuket viewpoints by car has more on stopping at spots like this one.

- Keep left on every bend — in places the road is barely two cars wide
- Select the low range before a descent — the brakes stay cool on the gradient
- Let a tailgating driver by at the next safe spot — you came for the view, not a lap time
- Pull into the viewpoint only if there is room — otherwise drive on and come back

> Never stop on the carriageway on a bend, even for one photo. The road is barely wide enough for two cars, and a stopped car on a blind bend pushes everyone coming round it into the wrong lane.

## Where to park at Nai Harn

Nai Harn has a large free parking area under the trees, plus a row along the road. In high season the shade is gone by ten, so arrive earlier if you want the car to stay cool, or park on the lake side. Inside the bay a single-lane loop runs around the lake; follow it rather than turning in the middle.

From the beach, Promthep Cape is 10 min further. The pages on driving to Nai Harn Beach and driving to Promthep Cape go into both stops, and car rental in Nai Harn describes the bay from the driver's seat.

At the Kata end, parking is tighter. Free spaces by the beach go early in high season, and Kata Noi has only a small bay and one road lined with hotel guests' cars. Arrive early morning or after four; if Kata Noi is full, go back over the headland rather than improvise on the verge.

## The way back to Kata

Most people drive back after the sunset, and that is when the road changes. Everyone leaves at once, in the dark, on a hill road, and many are on scooters with weak lights. The bends you took calmly in daylight now come with headlights in your eyes.

You have two sensible choices. Go down with the crowd at a steady pace, keeping your distance and not overtaking, or wait twenty minutes until the wave has passed and the road is quiet again.

### The calmer way home

In rain, at night or in your first days on the left, use the eastern exit through Rawai towards Chalong. It is flatter, wider and calmer, and longer.

Nai Harn has only two ways out, and both go over hills: the northern winding road you came in on and the eastern exit through Rawai to Chalong. If a flight is next rather than Kata, the airport is 55 min from Nai Harn, and the eastern exit is the easier start. For a full day along the coast, see the southern beaches by car; for other districts, start from car rental in Phuket.

## FAQ

### How long is the drive from Kata to Nai Harn?

About 15 min on the winding road through the hills past Kata Noi. If Promthep Cape is on the plan too, allow twenty minutes for the run to the cape and the beach, and more after sunset, when everyone leaves together.

### Is the Kata to Nai Harn road dangerous?

Demanding rather than dangerous, if you drive it slowly. The road is narrow, barely two cars wide in places, with several sharp bends and good asphalt. In rain or at night the flatter eastern route through Rawai is the calmer choice.

### Where can I stop for the viewpoint above Kata Noi?

Only in the small pull-in. If it is full, drive on, turn around somewhere sensible and come back. Never stop on the carriageway, and never on a bend, where cars coming round cannot see you.

### Where do I park at Nai Harn?

In the large free area under the trees or in the row along the road. In high season the shade is gone by ten, so come earlier or park on the lake side. Inside the bay, follow the single-lane loop around the lake.

### Is it better to drive back after sunset or wait?

Wait twenty minutes if you can. Right after sunset everyone leaves at once, in the dark, many on scooters with weak lights. If you go straight away, stay with the crowd at a steady pace and do not overtake.
