How to Rent a Car in Phuket: Step by Step

To take a car in Phuket you need your passport, a driving licence with an international permit, and a deposit. That is where the compulsory list ends. Everything else is settled in messages beforehand: who brings the car, when, where, and on what terms.

What to have ready before you book

The document side is simple and it is worth getting exactly right, because it is the one part nobody can improvise on the day.

Your home driving licence, valid, with the car category on it. An international driving permit issued in your own country alongside it. Your passport, which you show and keep. And a means of covering the deposit, whether that is a card or cash.

Who goes on the agreement

Everyone who will actually drive. Adding a second driver at the start takes a minute and costs almost nothing. Letting someone drive who is not named is the single fastest way to lose your cover completely, and it is discovered at exactly the wrong moment.

  • Home licence with the car category, in date
  • International driving permit issued in your own country
  • Passport, which you show but never hand over
  • Card or cash for the deposit
  • Names of everyone who will drive

What it means for the car

Choose the class around your route rather than your self-image. Two people staying near one beach want something small and easy to park. Four people with luggage want a boot. Anyone up a hill lane wants ground clearance.

Automatic and air conditioning

Almost everything here is automatic, which is what you want on hill roads and in slow traffic. The other thing worth being fussy about is the air conditioning: check that it cools while the car is standing still, not just while it is moving. In this climate that one test predicts your comfort for the whole trip.

The steps in order

Messages first

Tell us the dates, where you are staying, how many of you there are and whether you need a child seat. Ask about the deposit, what the insurance covers and what it excludes, and get the answers in writing. A chat thread is a perfectly good record and it settles every later question.

Delivery

We bring the car to your hotel, villa or the airport at the agreed time. There is no office to travel to and no counter to queue at.

Inspection and drive away

Walk around the car with the person delivering it. Photograph the four corners, the wheels, the windscreen and anything already damaged. Check the fuel level and agree it. Then sign, not before.

The return

Same place or a different one, whichever suits your departure. Say which when you book so the timing is arranged rather than improvised on the day.

Deposit and insurance: what to ask up front

Ask three questions before the car arrives and you will avoid every common dispute. How much is the deposit and in what form. When and how does it come back. And what exactly does the insurance cover.

What the cover includes

Get the excess figure in writing, and get the exclusions too. Undersides, tyres, glass and interiors are commonly outside standard cover, and knowing that in advance changes how you drive on an unsealed lane. If anything is unclear, ask again rather than assuming the generous reading.

Nobody here should be asking to keep your passport as security. If that comes up anywhere, treat it as the end of the conversation.

Returning the car: fuel, fines and cleanliness

The normal fuel arrangement is full to full. Fill up near the hand-back point, keep the receipt, and there is nothing to discuss.

Cleanliness is judged sensibly. Road dust and salt film after a week of beaches are expected. Sand all through the interior, or something spilled and left, are not.

Fines arrive later

Camera fines on the main roads come through after the fact rather than on the spot. If you are stopped by police, or you think a camera caught you, tell us. Something mentioned at the time is a small administrative matter; something discovered weeks later is a conversation nobody enjoys.

If anything goes wrong on the road, message us first. We are on the island, we answer, and most problems are solved faster than you would expect. WhatsApp is the quickest route to us, and Telegram works just as well.

Частые вопросы

Can I rent a car in Phuket on my home licence?

Yes, with an international driving permit issued in your own country alongside it. The licence on its own is not the full set.

What do I need to rent a car in Thailand besides a licence?

Your passport, which you show and keep, and a deposit. Nothing else is compulsory.

Is there a minimum age for renting a car in Phuket?

There is, and it varies by operator and by class. Ask when you enquire so it is settled before anything is booked.

Where is the car delivered in Phuket?

To your hotel, your villa or the airport, at whatever time suits your arrival. There is no office to travel to.

Is a deposit or prepayment required?

A deposit is normal and its size and form should be agreed in writing before the car arrives. Nobody should ask to keep your passport instead.

What do I do if the car breaks down on the road?

Message us straight away with your location. We are here on the island and we sort it out; do not arrange a garage yourself.
