Do you need a car in Phuket

The island stretches fifty kilometres from north to south, and everything of interest sits around its edges. The airport to the southern beaches is over an hour, Patong to Promthep forty minutes, neighbouring bays fifteen apiece. In the tropics those are not walking distances.

Public transport formally exists: a few songthaew routes between areas and a bus to the airport. They run rarely, finish early and only follow the main roads — you still have to get to a particular beach or villa separately.

That leaves taxis and scooters. Taxis on the island are expensive, and three or four rides a day cost about the same as a day of car rental. A scooter is the cheapest of all, but with children, luggage or in the rain it is not an option — and the rain here is short and very heavy.

Almost everyone staying more than a few days who wants to see the island, rather than one beach next to the hotel, needs a car.

Which documents you need

An international driving permit is essential — the booklet issued alongside your national licence. A national licence on its own has no force in Thailand: with only that, you are formally driving without a licence.

There are two consequences, and both are serious. First, a fine at a document check, and checks are regular on this island, especially on the west coast. Second, and far worse: in an accident the insurance does not work, and the cost falls on you entirely.

Besides the licence you need a passport and a way of leaving a deposit. We discuss the deposit terms in advance — there are options without cash, but they have to be agreed before the car is delivered, not over the bonnet.

Driving on the left: what changes in practice

The wheel is on the right, the traffic on the left. In the first hours the hard part is not the lane but the details: the indicator and the wipers are mirrored from what you know, so almost every newcomer switches on the wipers at their first turn.

Second, the view. The size of the car feels different, and the right-hand side seems further away than it is. On the narrow streets of Kata and Patong you notice that immediately.

Third, the habit of looking the wrong way. Pulling out of a car park or a side road, you look right first. That resets in a day or two, but take the first drives slowly.

Scooters are a story of their own. They filter between lanes, overtake on both sides and appear in your mirrors out of nowhere. Check the mirrors before every lane change, not only at junctions.

Which class of car to take

An economy car covers most situations: the island is small, the roads are mostly good, and on the narrow streets of the beach areas a short car beats a long one. It is also the cheapest on fuel, which shows on a rental of a month or more.

People take an SUV for two things: clearance on the driveways up to villas on slopes, and confidence on the winding roads of the south. If you are staying in Surin, Kamala, Kata or the hills above Patong, the difference in comfort is felt every day.

A minivan is needed when there are more than four of you or the luggage is bulky. But parking one in Kata or by the markets of Patong is an exercise of its own, and that is worth planning for.

The premium class makes sense for long drives on the highway and for people to whom the car itself matters. In terms of capability and convenience on the island it adds nothing.

Petrol stations, fuel and parking

Stations on the island are frequent, nearly all open around the clock, and almost all have an attendant — you do not fill up yourself, you just name an amount or say full. Cards are not accepted everywhere; cash is more reliable.

There are several grades of fuel, and you need the one marked by the filler flap. We talk it through and show you when you collect the car.

Parking depends on the area. Karon has a long row of free spaces along the seafront, Bang Tao has roomy car parks at the shopping centres, and in Kata and Patong you have to hunt. One rule matters above all: yellow and white marking along the kerb means no stopping, and cars are towed from there.

Fines, police and what to do after an accident

Document checks on the island are routine, especially on the west coast and on the roads out of the beach areas. They ask for the licence and the car documents. With an international permit the matter is closed in a minute.

Speed is enforced by cameras and checkpoints. Fines go to the rental company and are then passed on to the renter — so it is better not to ignore the tickets.

After an accident the main rule is: do not move the car until the police and the insurance representative arrive, unless it is blocking traffic. First photograph everything — the position of the cars, the damage, the number plates, the wider scene. Then call us and we get involved in sorting it out.

What rental costs and what the price depends on

The price comes from four things: the class of car, the length of the rental, the season, and the deposit and insurance terms. Class and length are obvious; it is usually the other two that create the difference between offers that look identical at first glance.

The seasons in Phuket are pronounced. High season is December to March, when everyone arrives at once and cars are booked out in advance. Low season is May to October, and that is the best time both for price and for choice.

Length works in steps: a day, a week, a month. A month is not counted as thirty days but at a monthly rate, and the difference is substantial.

And the deposit. Terms differ radically between rental firms — from a large sum in cash to options with no deposit at all. That is worth finding out before you book, not when you collect the car.

How to book and collect the car

You write to us on a messenger: the dates, how many of you, where to bring it. We suggest options for what you actually need — not simply we have this car, but taking into account where you are staying and where you will be driving.

We deliver to a hotel, villa, apartment or the airport. Any time, including at night: flights land around the clock and there is no surcharge for the late hour.

At handover we inspect the car together, photograph its condition, check the documents and the fuel level. It takes about fifteen minutes and removes every question at the return.

The return happens wherever suits you, including the departures terminal. We agree the time in advance so it does not clash with your check-in.

What to see with a rental car

The south in a day: Nai Harn, Ya Nui beach, Promthep Cape at sunset and the windmill. All within fifteen minutes of each other, on a beautiful road.

The north in another: Nai Thon, Nai Yang and Mai Khao — the quietest and widest beaches on the island, where even in high season you can walk along the sand and meet nobody.

The east and the middle: the Big Buddha on its hill, Wat Chalong, and the Old Town of Phuket Town with its Portuguese-era buildings and markets. That is the best evening route — the road back is empty.

And the passes of the west coast: the viewpoint between Kamala and Patong, the winding road from Kata to Nai Harn, the view over three bays from the hill above Karon. Those roads are the reason people rent a car.
