Kata is two bays, Kata and Kata Noi, squeezed between hills. The streets here are narrow, the buildings are packed close, and every road out goes uphill. We deliver the car to your hotel or villa, including houses on the slopes that are awkward to reach with luggage.

Kata is compact: the beach is walkable, the cafes are walkable. A car here is for something else — getting to Nai Harn, climbing to the viewpoint, or taking your suitcases to the airport without paying a taxi silly money.
Kata Noi is cut off by a hill, and the road there goes up and down on a gradient. Villas on that hill need a car with something in reserve: after rain the surface is slippery, and there is nowhere to turn around on the narrow bends.
In season the beach car park is full from the morning. It is easier to leave the car on the side streets further up the slope and walk down — five minutes on foot, and no lap of the seafront.
Allow twenty minutes for the run to Promthep Cape and Nai Harn. The road is beautiful but narrow, and in the evening everyone who watched the sunset is on it.
How the area and its exits work
Kata lies in a bowl: the main street runs inland from the beach to the junction with the Karon road, and from there everything climbs. The second way out is the southern one, along the coast to Kata Noi and on to Nai Harn.
The southern stretch is the most scenic and the most demanding: a narrow winding road with several sharp bends and a viewpoint above the bay. The asphalt is good, but in places there is barely width for two cars passing.
Inside the area the streets are narrow, with scooters parked along both sides. The size of your car matters far more here than in neighbouring Karon.

Parking in Kata
There are not many free spaces by the beach, and in high season they are taken from early morning. The main supply is the bays along the street running inland from the beach, and the car parks of the larger hotels.
Parking in Kata Noi is tighter still: the bay is small, there is one road, and hotel guests cars line it. Better to arrive there early in the morning or after four.

- On the slopes always leave it in gear with the handbrake on, the gradients are steep
- Yellow and white markings mean no stopping, and there is a lot of it here
Which car to take
In Kata compactness matters more than volume. An economy car gets down the narrow streets and fits into a short bay where an SUV no longer will. This is that rare area where a small car is objectively more convenient than a big one.
An SUV is justified if you are staying on a slope and drive uphill every day, or if you plan a lot of driving around the south of the island over the winding roads. Take a minivan only for a large group, and knowing you will be parking further from the water.

What to keep in mind at the wheel
There are a lot of scooters in Kata and they filter between the lanes. On narrow streets keep left and check your mirrors before any manoeuvre.
In the evening pedestrians walk on the road: there are almost no pavements, and the market and cafes open straight onto the street. Keep to thirty in the middle of the area.
After rain the southern winding road turns slippery, and the water runs down it in a solid sheet. In that weather it is wiser to head to Karon and go round the south on the east road through Chalong.
Routes from Kata
The south is the main direction: Nai Harn, Ya Nui beach, Promthep Cape with its sunsets and the windmill. All of it fits into one evening and one road.
North through Karon runs the way to Patong — twenty minutes to the markets and the seafront. In season the trip back in the evening takes longer because of the oncoming flow.
East through Chalong opens up the inland part of the island: the pier where the boats leave for the islands, the Big Buddha on its hill, and Phuket Town. Kata to Chalong is about twenty-five minutes.
