Phuket Airport to Kata by Car
The drive from Phuket Airport to Kata takes about 50 min in calm traffic: south on Thepkrasattri, then the bypass, then the hills between Karon and Kata. At rush hour or in heavy rain it runs longer, because the whole island funnels through the same southbound road.

How long it takes and which road
Allow 50 min from the terminal to Kata on a clear road. You head south on Thepkrasattri, the island's main north to south artery, pick up the bypass to skip the town traffic, and finish over the hills between Karon and Kata. The first part is wide and fast; the last part is short, narrow and steep.
Where the traffic stops
Thepkrasattri carries everyone going south, so at rush hour it fills with commuters, delivery trucks and scooters weaving between lanes. In rain the whole column slows, and the hills at the end become the slowest stretch of the trip: water runs across the asphalt and drivers brake early into every bend.
If you have not driven on the left before, the long straight road from the airport is a good place to settle in before the hills. Our notes on left-hand driving cover the habits to fix first, including the scooters that pass on your left.
What that means for the car
An automatic is the only sensible choice here. The streets in Kata are narrow and every road out goes uphill, so you will do hill starts in traffic daily, and on the way down you want the low range, L or B on the selector, holding the car instead of the brakes.
Luggage decides the class. A couple with cabin bags fits a hatchback. A family with large suitcases needs a sedan or a compact SUV, and the extra power earns its keep on the climb between Karon and Kata with everyone on board.
Check the air conditioning before you load, while the car is still in the shade. On a slow climb in the midday heat a weak system gives up first. In the wet season look at the tread as well: these hills turn slick after rain, and bald tyres are what makes a tight bend dangerous.
A local choosing a car for Kata takes something compact and automatic: small enough to pass a parked van on a narrow lane, strong enough to pull away uphill with a full car.
If you are landing at Phuket Airport and heading to Kata, we can have the car waiting at arrivals: automatic, first-class commercial insurance, refundable deposit, the total for your dates fixed in chat. Send the dates on WhatsApp or through the booking form; the page on car rental in Kata covers the district itself.
Car at the airport or car at the hotel?
This is a longer transfer than most, so the choice matters more.
A car at arrivals is the stronger option when you land at night, travel with children or carry bulky luggage. You load once, set the air conditioning the way you like it and stop wherever you want on the way south, with no driver waiting on you.
A taxi or Grab to the hotel, with the car delivered there afterwards, suits you when the flight has worn you out or when the left side of the road is new to you. Your first drive through the hills then happens rested and in daylight, not at the end of a long travel day.
- Landing at night with kids — take the car at arrivals, children go straight from the terminal to their seats
- New to driving on the left — taxi first, car at the hotel the next day
- Surfboard or big suitcases — car at arrivals, one load instead of two
- Very tired after the flight — delivery to the hotel, first drive after sleep
Where to park in Kata
Kata is built on slopes, and the streets are narrow. Street parking goes quickly near the beach, so the easy option is to leave the car at the hotel and walk down. When you do park on a hill, turn the wheels towards the kerb and use the parking brake as well as P.
The district has 2 bays, Kata and Kata Noi, linked by one road. Karon is 5 min over the hill, and Nai Harn is 15 min on the winding road south, both easy trips once you have the car.
ImportantAfter rain the hills between Karon and Kata and the road towards Nai Harn get slippery, and the bends are tight. Drop your speed before each turn, not in it, and keep well back from the scooter in front, because it may brake or slide without warning.
The way back to the airport
Kata to the airport is the same 50 min in calm traffic, more at rush hour or in rain, and the climb out of Kata comes first. Plan backwards from check-in: the drive north on Thepkrasattri, a margin for traffic, then time for the handover and the walk to departures.
Returning the car
The return is quick when the car comes back in the state you received it. Check the fuel level your contract asks for, then photograph the car from all sides and the dashboard with the fuel gauge. Walk round it together with our driver; photos from pickup and from return close any question about a scratch on the spot. For a family flying in with a lot of luggage, minivan rental in Kata explains how one car for the whole group works in the narrow bay.
Phuket Airport to Kata Noi
Kata Noi is the smaller of the 2 bays, reached by the one road from Kata. From the airport the route is the same, then you continue through Kata and over the last rise. The road is narrow and busy with hotel traffic, so take it slowly and give way where the lane pinches.

Common questions
How far is Kata from Phuket Airport?
About 50 min by car in calm traffic: south on Thepkrasattri, then the bypass and the hills between Karon and Kata. Allow more at rush hour and in rain.
How long is the drive from Kata Beach to the airport?
The same 50 min in calm traffic, with the uphill exit from Kata at the start. Add a margin for rush hour, rain and returning the car before check-in.
Can you deliver the car at the airport at night?
Yes. We deliver at arrivals or to the hotel at any hour, night landings included. Send your flight and dates on WhatsApp and the car will be ready when you come out.
Do I need an IDP to rent a car at Phuket Airport?
Yes. You need your passport, your national licence and an International Driving Permit. A second driver has to be added in advance. Our driving licence rules page has the details.
Is it hard to drive from the airport to Kata?
Most of it is easy: a wide road south. The final hills between Karon and Kata are narrow and steep, and slippery after rain. Use low gear downhill, brake before bends and give scooters room.
How difficult is the drive from Phuket airport to Kata in heavy rain?
The highway part stays simple; the end is what changes. In heavy rain the hills between Karon and Kata turn slippery and water runs down the streets towards the sea, so allow extra time beyond the usual 50 minutes, take the descent in a low gear and keep out of standing water near the beach.
