Inspecting a Rental Car in Phuket: What to Look At

The inspection at handover takes about seven minutes and settles almost every dispute at the end. You film the car all the way round, record every scratch and the fuel level, and only then sign. A skipped inspection is the one mistake that costs money later.

Why the inspection matters here

Rental cars on a busy island collect marks. Kerbed wheels, car park scuffs, stone chips: most of the fleet carries some, and that is normal. What matters is that the marks already there are recorded as already there.

Without a record, the conversation at the end becomes one person's memory against another's. With a two-minute video, there is no conversation at all.

What the record settles

Existing damage, the fuel level you started with, the condition of the tyres, and the fact that the air conditioning worked when you took it. Those four things account for nearly every disagreement anyone has at a return.

What it means for the car

An inspection is not only about protecting yourself from a charge. It is your one chance to catch something that will make your week worse.

Brakes and steering

Drive a short loop before the person delivering the car leaves. The brakes should stop the car straight without pulling to one side, and the steering should not vibrate. On an island of hill descents, brakes are not a detail.

Air conditioning

Check it while the car is idling, not while moving. Plenty of systems cool adequately at speed and give up in a traffic queue, which is exactly where you will need it. If it is weak, say so immediately rather than hoping.

Step by step

The walk-around

Start the video at the front and walk the whole perimeter slowly, keeping the whole car in frame. Then close in on each mark you find. Bumper corners, wheel rims and door edges are where damage lives.

Inside and underneath

Film the interior, including seats and boot. Crouch and film along the sills and the front spoiler. Undersides are commonly outside cover, so this is the part worth documenting even though it feels excessive.

The dashboard

Photograph the dashboard with the engine running: fuel level, odometer, and any warning lights. A light that is already on needs to be discussed now, not explained later.

  • One continuous video around the whole car, then close-ups
  • Wheels and bumper corners: the two most common problem areas
  • Interior, boot, sills and front spoiler
  • Dashboard with the engine running: fuel, mileage, warning lights
  • Tyre tread, checked with your own eyes
  • A short test drive before the delivery driver leaves

What to write down in words

Video is the evidence; the written record is the agreement. Note existing damage in plain words on the handover document, and if there is no document, put the same list in a message so it is timestamped.

About the excess

Have the excess figure written down before you drive off, along with what is excluded. Undersides, tyres, glass and interiors are the usual exclusions. Knowing them changes how you approach an unsealed lane, and that is precisely why they should be established at the start rather than discovered at the end.

The return: closing the rental cleanly

Do the same walk-around in reverse, on video, at hand-back. It takes two minutes and it closes the rental with a record from both ends.

Fuel

Return it at the agreed level, normally full, and keep the receipt from the station until the deposit is settled.

The deposit

Agree at the start when and how it comes back, then hold the person to it. If it is a hold on a card, ask how long the release takes. If it is cash, it should come back at hand-back once the car is checked.

Small things that surface later

The car's documents

Find out where the vehicle papers are kept during handover. You will want to know at a roadside check, not five minutes after one starts.

A contact for problems

Save a working number before you drive away, and confirm it is one that answers messages. On an island, the difference between a good rental and a bad one is usually how fast someone replies when something goes wrong. We answer on WhatsApp and on Telegram.

Частые вопросы

What should I check when collecting a rental car?

The whole exterior on video, the wheels and bumper corners, the interior, the tyre tread, the dashboard with the engine running, and the air conditioning at idle. Then a short test drive before the delivery driver leaves.

Should I film the car when I rent it?

Yes. One continuous video around the car is more reliable than a set of photos, because it shows the whole vehicle in one unbroken take.

What if I find a scratch after driving away?

Photograph it and send it straight away with the time. Reported immediately, it is clearly not yours; reported at the end, it is a discussion.

Am I responsible for damage that was there before?

Not if it was recorded. That is exactly what the handover video and the written list exist for.

How much fuel should be in the car when I return it?

Whatever level you received it at, normally full. Fill up near the hand-back point and keep the receipt.

What should I look for in the tyres in Phuket?

Real tread depth and no visible damage to the sidewalls. Wet roads and worn tyres are the combination behind most weather-related incidents here.
