Rawai is a place people live in rather than holiday in: a long seafront of fish restaurants, a pier with boats to the islands, and residential streets inland. There is no swimming beach in Rawai: for the sea people drive to Nai Harn, for groceries to Chalong, for entertainment to the west. Every one of those trips is ten to twenty minutes at the wheel.
The roads in the south are flat and, by local standards, empty, and parking is free everywhere. This is the calmest area for a driver who has only just got used to driving on the left.
Many long-stayers take a car for a month or more. Over that period it makes sense to look at consumption and boot space rather than at class: a weekly run to Makro and Lotus is standard here.
The seafront is busy in the evening because of the fish market, and the spaces along the water run out. It is easier to park on a side street and walk a hundred metres.
Rawai as a base for the south
The logic of the area is simple: it is not a beach place itself, but the beaches are closer from here than from anywhere else in the south. Nai Harn, Ya Nui, Ao Sane are ten to fifteen minutes away. Meanwhile housing is cheaper here, and the shops and markets are real local ones.
The boats to the nearer islands leave from here too: Rawai pier works all day, with both tourist speedboats and local longtails. You can leave the car nearby for the whole day.
Roads and traffic
Rawai sits on flat ground; there are no winding roads inside the area. The main road runs along the seafront, the second one from the roundabout towards Chalong. Both are wide and marked.
The character of the area is dense local traffic: plenty of scooters, pickups and school runs. During the day the flow is noticeable, but it moves slowly and predictably.
West the road climbs to Nai Harn; north it heads to Chalong and on to the highway. East takes you to the cape and the viewpoints.

Parking
A long row of free spaces runs along the seafront, and during the day there are enough of them. It gets tight in the evening, when locals and visitors arrive for the fish restaurants.
There is a separate area by the pier for people heading out to the islands. Leaving the car there for a whole day is normal practice, but do not leave valuables inside.

Which class of car to take
Rawai is the case where an economy car covers everything: flat roads, short distances, easy parking. Most guests staying here long-term take exactly that.
An SUV makes sense with frequent trips to Nai Harn and Promthep — that is where the climbs begin. Minivans are taken by families and groups heading to the pier with luggage or gear.
For a long rental from a month, look at fuel consumption: over thirty days the difference between an economy car and an SUV is noticeable, while inside Rawai the advantages of a big car barely show at all.

Routes from Rawai
The south is done in a day: Nai Harn, Ya Nui, Ao Sane, Promthep Cape, the windmill. All of it within fifteen minutes of each other.
North through Chalong runs the road to the Big Buddha — a hill climb on a long winding road with a viewpoint at the top. From there the way carries on to Phuket Town, about forty minutes to the Old Town.
The west coast is further from here: Kata and Karon half an hour, Patong forty-five minutes. Those trips are better planned as a whole day rather than an evening outing.
