Driving on the Left in Phuket for the First Time
Yes, a first-timer can drive on the left in Phuket: Thailand keeps left, the steering wheel is on the right, and an automatic car leaves both hands and your attention free for the road. The answer changes only if you plan to drive straight out of a long night flight into the busiest hours, or without the licence and International Driving Permit the insurance depends on.

Short answer
Most drivers from right-hand countries adjust within the first hour, as long as that hour is calm. The car does half the work: sitting on the right puts your body next to the centre line, and the line tells you where the car belongs. On a two-lane road, keep the centre line close to your right shoulder and the rest of the car follows. The part that takes practice is turning, because the habit of swinging into the far lane is old and strong.
What feels different from the driver's seat
The indicator and the wipers may sit on the opposite stalks, so the first rain shower can start with the wipers going when you meant to turn. The rear-view mirror is on your left, and the kerb is on your left as well, which is where people misjudge the width of the car in the first days.
When to wait a little
If you land late at night, a short drive to the hotel on quiet roads is a fine first lesson. A drive through the evening rush after a long flight is not. Take the first proper drive the next morning, rested, on a road you have already seen on the map.
What that means for the car
An automatic gearbox is the single biggest help. With no clutch and no gear lever in your left hand, the only new thing is the side of the road. Every car we deliver is automatic, so there is nothing to relearn with your feet.
At handover we walk around the car together and check the body, tyres, air conditioning and fuel level. Use those minutes to sit in the driver's seat before signing: set the mirrors, find the lights and the wipers, and ask anything about the controls while the car is still parked. The rental agreement stays in your hands, and it belongs in the glovebox for the whole trip.
Documents do not change because you are new to the left: a passport, your national licence and an International Driving Permit, which is valid only together with the national licence. Our driving licence rules page covers the details. If two of you will share the wheel, add the second driver in advance with the same documents; an unlisted driver at the wheel voids the insurance.
If this is your first time on the left, take the car where you are staying rather than at a busy pickup point. We deliver an automatic car with first-class commercial insurance to arrivals, your hotel, villa or apartment at any hour, inspect it with you and fix the total for your dates in chat, with a refundable deposit. Send your dates on WhatsApp or use the booking form.
Step by step
These steps take little time and remove most of the surprises of the first day. Do the first two at home and the rest at handover, while the car is still parked.
- Check that your IDP matches your national licence — the insurance holds only with both
- Look at the route from the handover point on a map — the first turns are the ones people miss
- Adjust the seat and all three mirrors before moving — the left mirror is the one you will rely on
- Find the indicator and wiper stalks with the engine off — so the first turn does not start the wipers
- Say keep left out loud at every turn for the first day — it breaks the old habit faster
- Drive the first stretch in daylight on a quiet road — the brain adjusts faster without pressure
Common mistakes
The typical errors on the left come in the same few moments, and all of them are about habit rather than skill.
The first is turning right into the far lane, which puts the car against oncoming traffic. The second is entering a roundabout the wrong way: here traffic moves clockwise, and you give way to cars already on it. The third is drifting towards the left kerb because the car feels wider than it is. The fourth is changing lanes without checking the mirror for scooters, which filter on both sides of cars in slow traffic. If you are still deciding, is it safe to drive in Phuket weighs these habits against the roads themselves.
ImportantScooters pass on both sides of a car, including between you and the kerb. Before every turn and every lane change, check the mirror and glance over your shoulder, even if the road looked empty a second ago.
Prices & numbers
For a first time on the left, a small car is easier to place in the lane and to park. Every car we deliver is an automatic.
- Toyota Yaris: 2 520 ฿ for 3 days (840 ฿ a day), 5 513 ฿ for 7 days (788 ฿ a day); refundable deposit 5 000 ฿.
- Damage to third parties is covered up to 800,000 ฿ by the first-class commercial insurance included in the price.
- Fuel: the level is written down at handover, and the car comes back with the same level. A car returned dirty costs 300 ฿ for washing.

Common questions
Is it hard to drive on the left in Thailand for the first time?
Most drivers adjust within the first hour on a calm road. An automatic car makes it easier, because the only new thing is the side of the road.
Do cars in Thailand have the steering wheel on the right?
Yes, the wheel is on the right and traffic keeps left. The indicator and wiper stalks may also be swapped compared with your car at home.
Which way do roundabouts go in Phuket?
Clockwise. Give way to cars already on the roundabout and keep left as you leave it.
Should I rent an automatic or a manual car?
Automatic, especially on your first trip to the left side. All our cars are automatic, so both hands stay on the wheel.
What documents do I need to drive in Phuket?
A passport, your national driving licence and an International Driving Permit. The IDP counts only together with the national licence.
What is the most common mistake on the left?
Turning right into the far lane out of habit. The second is forgetting that scooters pass on both sides of the car.
Where can I practise driving on the left in Phuket?
Rawai in the south is a forgiving place to start: quiet roads, simple junctions and room to make a slow decision. Most drivers adjust within the first hour on a calm road, so the hill passes into Patong and Kata can wait for the second day.
