Mazda for people who like to drive
Mazda here runs from the small Mazda 2 to the CX-30 crossover. The Mazda 2 suits a couple who drive mostly between Rawai, Nai Harn and Phuket Town and want a car that is easy to park at the market. The Mazda 3 is longer and steadier on the highway, worth it if a trip to Khao Lak is on the plan.
The CX-3 and the CX-30 sit higher, and that matters on the steep driveways of hillside villas in Kamala and Surin. People who come from a Toyota of the same size usually notice that a Mazda feels tighter in the curves of the west-coast road. There is no minivan in this brand: for a big group, look at the Toyota Veloz or the Honda BR-V.

Toyota Yaris or Mazda 2 for Phuket's hills?
The Mazda 2 has a 1.3-litre petrol engine against the 1.2 litres of a Yaris, so the gap on a climb is small. Both are automatics with five seats and front-wheel drive, and with two people either one takes the hill between Patong and Karon without drama. Load four adults and luggage, and both run in a low gear.
The real step up in this brand is the Mazda 3, with a 2.0-litre engine. It is the answer to small cars that crawl up the passes with the air conditioning on.
Is a Mazda 2 big enough for two suitcases?
For two people, yes, and the body decides how comfortable it is. We have the Mazda 2 as a hatchback and as a sedan, with the same engine and gearbox. The sedan has a separate boot under a lid: two large cases go in flat and stay hidden while the car waits at a beach car park.
In the hatchback the cases share the space with the cabin. Fine for the airport run, less so when the car stands all afternoon in the sun at Nai Harn. A family of three or four with ordinary luggage fits in either version.
Mazda CX-3 or CX-30 for a hillside villa?
Both are five-seat crossovers with a 2.0-litre petrol engine and an automatic gearbox, priced in the same class, so the choice is often just which one is free for your dates. What they share matters more: crossover clearance on the uphill turnings to villas above Kamala and Layan, where a sedan can touch the concrete.
The Mazda CX-3 is the shorter of the two and easier in the lanes of Phuket Town; the Mazda CX-30 is a little longer. A CX-5 is available on request.
