The complex runs by its own rules: there is a post at the entrance, a barrier, and sometimes a request to name your hotel or show the booking. Guest cars are let through, but it is worth registering a rental car once at your hotel desk — after that the barrier opens without a conversation every time you come back from dinner.

Inside, the roads are private, well surfaced and quiet, with speed limits that are lower than they look and speed humps that are not always painted. Drive as if a child on a bicycle is about to appear from between two parked cars, because on the internal roads that is the actual risk rather than other traffic.

The internal geography surprises people. Walking between two buildings that look adjacent on a map can be a real distance in the heat, which is why shuttle boats and buggies exist here. A car covers the same ground in a couple of minutes and gives you the freedom to leave the complex whenever you want, which is the point.

What it means for the car

The terrain here is flat: no passes, no hairpins, no long climbs. The straightforward conclusion is that an economy car covers this district completely, and there is nothing to be gained by paying for clearance or power you will never use. Save that decision for a trip that involves the hills in the south.

What does matter is comfort in traffic and a working air conditioner, because the road out along the coast fills up in the evening and you will spend time sitting in it. A car that cools quickly and parks easily is worth more here than one that climbs well.

Size is worth a thought too. The main coastal road carries fast traffic, and the turn in and out of the complex takes concentration in anything long. Something mid-sized or smaller makes the daily entry and exit less of an event, especially after dark.

Parking in Laguna and nearby

Each hotel has its own car park, usually free for guests and often with shaded bays under a canopy. That is the district's main practical advantage: the daily parking question answers itself, and there is none of the competition for a space by the sea that defines Patong.

Outside the complex, the shops and restaurants at Cherng Talay have their own parking, and it works well outside the evening peak. Arrive there before the dinner rush and you park in front of the door; arrive in the middle of it and you circle for a while like everyone else.

One local rule worth knowing: in the wet season, avoid the low ground near the waterways and canals. Water collects there first and drains last, and a car left in a dip during a heavy night's rain can be standing in more of it than you would like by morning.

Where it is convenient to drive from Laguna

Sitting at the northern end of the west coast gives you a short run to the airport and to the northern beaches, and a long one to the south of the island. The airport is roughly twenty minutes up the coastal road when the traffic behaves, and Nai Yang and Mai Khao are about the same, which makes early flights genuinely relaxed.

Going south is the other story. Patong, Kata and Karon are a sequence of coastal bends and traffic lights, and the journey stretches considerably in the evening and in high season. It is a pleasant drive with time in hand and a frustrating one when there is a dinner reservation involved.

Phuket Town is reached by cutting inland rather than following the coast, which is faster and much less scenic. For a day of markets, the old town and the piers, that inland route is the one to take out and back — the coast road is for the days when the drive is part of the point.

Delivery to Laguna
