Take one when five or more people share the house, or when there are children, a pushchair and a week of luggage. Bang Tao spreads along a 6 km beach, the villa quarters sit back from the sea, and the two shopping centres are next to each other rather than next to you, so a group without a car ends up booking two taxis for every outing.
One car for the whole group is simpler: everyone leaves together, and nobody waits at the beach for the second ride. For a couple, or a family of three with light bags, cheap car hire in Bang Tao does the same daily runs for less.
The airport run is short, the luggage question is not
The drive from the airport is about 25 minutes in calm traffic: south on Thepkrasattri, then west at Cherngtalay. In rush hour or heavy rain allow more, but it remains the easiest arrival of any beach district.
What needs thought is the boot. Seven people fit in a seven-seater, but seven people and seven large suitcases rarely do, because the third row takes the space where the cases would go. For a full group, plan two cars for the airport days, or have the bags travel separately.
At the gate: give us the development name and a contact
Much of Bang Tao's accommodation sits inside gated developments with barriers and a security post. Delivery inside them is possible by arrangement, and it goes quickly when we know the name of the development and who to ask for at the gate.
If the internal roads are tight, meet the car at the barrier instead and do the inspection there. On the first day, tell security that the minivan is yours: it saves a stop at the barrier every time you come back.

The shopping centres have proper car parks with shade, and that is where a long car is easiest to leave. At the beach, use the marked pull-ins and the ground near the beach clubs.
Stay off the sand tracks that lead towards the water. After heavy rain they hold water and soft patches that look harmless, and a loaded minivan is the car most likely to sink into one.
Day trips with the group start on flat road
