Why an SUV, when the roads here are flat
Honestly, not because of the roads. Bang Tao and Laguna are flat and a small car handles every lane in the district. People in villas take a crossover for what goes inside it — the kids, the suitcases on arrival day, a cool box, two beach umbrellas that never fit anywhere.
Then there is the drive south. Patong is about forty minutes away. Kata or Nai Harn is longer, with hill passes on the way, and four adults in a car with some room and engine to spare climb them without the strain.
Two of you, plans limited to beach, shops and dinner? Then an SUV buys you very little. Take economy car rental in Bang Tao and spend the difference on something nicer.
Which model for which villa week
Toyota C-HR or Mazda CX-30 — a couple, maybe with one child. Both are compact, they go into a narrow carport and park at the shopping centres on the first try.
Honda HR-V is the middle choice, a family of four with medium-sized cases. Honda CR-V is the largest of the crossovers we have here: four adults with a suitcase each, or a family planning drives to Phang Nga.
Ford Everest is a large SUV. It makes sense for a big group or long trips off the island. Note that large SUVs need a driver aged 23 or older.
Laguna: we warn security and bring the car to your building
Laguna is a gated resort complex at the northern end of Bang Tao, with its own roads, barriers and security posts. Before we drive in we warn the security post, so give us the hotel or villa name and the building when you book.
After handover, register the car once at the hotel desk. From then on the barrier just opens when you come back from dinner.

An SUV in the villa lanes
Between the villa blocks the lanes are narrow, there are speed humps and no pavements. Kids on bicycles, people walking along the edge, and after dark very few street lights.
You sit higher in a crossover than in a small car, which helps at blind turns past the hedges. Still, walking pace in there. Take the humps slowly — a loaded SUV comes down hard on the far side.
Parking at the shopping centres is free and there is plenty of it. The beach turnings are another story in high season, they fill up during the day, and squeezing an Everest in there is harder than a C-HR.
