Phuket Airport to Laguna, Bang Tao by Car
The drive from Phuket Airport to Laguna, Bang Tao takes about twenty minutes when the road is clear: south on Thepkrasattri from the terminal, then along the coastal road to the turn for the resort grounds. At rush hour or in heavy rain it runs longer, and inside Laguna you still have a security post and the internal roads to cover before you reach the door.

How long it takes and which road
Count on about twenty minutes from the terminal to the Laguna turn on a clear road. You leave the airport heading south on Thepkrasattri, then follow the coastal road towards Bang Tao. It is one of the shorter airport runs on the island, which is why picking the car up at arrivals rarely feels like a burden here.
Where the traffic stops
The time stretches at rush hour, when commuters and delivery trucks share the same lanes, and in heavy rain, when the whole column slows and drivers leave long gaps. Scooters pass on both sides, so keep checking the mirrors instead of watching only the car ahead.
The turn off the coastal road is not the end of the trip. Entry to the grounds is through a security post, and from the turn to the far buildings you can drive a couple of kilometres on internal roads. Have the name of your hotel or residence ready for the guard, with the booking open on your phone.
If driving on the left is new to you, this short run is a gentle first lesson. Our notes on left-hand driving cover the habits worth fixing before you set off.
What that means for the car
An automatic suits this route. There is essentially no climbing inside Laguna, so engine power matters little on the grounds; what counts is a car that stays calm in stop-and-go traffic on the coastal road and at walking pace past the barriers.
Luggage and passengers decide the class. Two people with cabin bags fit a hatchback. A family with large suitcases, a pushchair or golf bags needs a sedan or a compact SUV, because the boot fills up long before the seats do.
Test the air conditioning before loading, while the car still stands in the shade: after a flight you want the cabin cold by the time you pull away from the terminal. In the wet season look at the tyres as well, since good tread is what keeps the car straight when you brake hard on a wet coastal road.
A local choosing a car for Laguna takes something compact and automatic. Inside the grounds it barely matters, but the car earns its keep on the trips out: to Cherng Talay for shops, cafés and fuel, and to the beaches further south. For a villa in the town itself, see Phuket Airport to Cherngtalay by car.
If you are landing at Phuket Airport and heading to Laguna, we can have the car waiting at arrivals: automatic, first-class commercial insurance, refundable deposit, the total for your dates fixed in chat. Send the dates on WhatsApp or through the booking form; the page on car rental in Laguna, Bang Tao covers the district itself, and car rental in Phuket covers the rest of the island.
Car at the airport or car at the hotel?
The run is short, so the decision depends on how you arrive rather than how far you go.
A car at arrivals makes sense when you land at night, travel with children or carry bulky bags. You load once, drive for about twenty minutes and roll up to the security post in your own car, with no second handover at the hotel.
A taxi or Grab to the hotel, with the car brought there afterwards, suits you when the flight has worn you out or when you want your first drive on the left in daylight. On the first evening you hardly need a car anyway: in Laguna a car is needed less for getting around inside than for getting out.
- Night landing with kids — car at arrivals, nobody waits on the kerb with sleepy children
- First time driving on the left — taxi tonight, car at the hotel the next morning
- Golf bags or big suitcases — car at arrivals, one load instead of two
- Long flight and a quiet first evening planned — delivery to the hotel, first drive after sleep
Where to park in Laguna, Bang Tao
Laguna is a gated resort complex at the northern end of Bang Tao, with its own internal roads, barriers and security posts. The simplest plan is to keep the car at your hotel or residence and use it only when you leave the grounds. At each barrier, slow right down and wait for the guard to wave you through.
The ground is flat, so parking is easy: no hill starts, no wheels turned into a kerb. The nearest shops, cafés and fuel are in Cherng Talay, just outside the grounds, and that is also the place to fill up before the return trip.
ImportantDo not leave the car on the verge or across a lane outside the grounds overnight. Parking where it blocks traffic can end with a fine or the car being towed, and getting it back will cost you a morning of your holiday. Use the parking at your hotel or residence inside Laguna.
The way back to the airport
Laguna to the airport is the same run in reverse: about twenty minutes along the coastal road and north on Thepkrasattri when it is clear, plus the few minutes from your building to the barrier. Plan backwards from check-in: the drive, a margin for rush hour and rain, then time for the handover and the walk to departures.
Returning the car
Handing the car back is quick if nothing has changed since pickup. Top up the fuel in Cherng Talay to the level your contract names, take photos of each side and of the dashboard with the gauge, and look the car over together with our driver at the terminal. Matching photos from both ends close any question about a mark on the bodywork there and then.
Renting a car for this drive
No car yet for this trip? It can be delivered to your hotel or villa anywhere on the island, and delivery is counted separately from the daily rental rate. At handover you leave a refundable deposit that depends on the model, and first-class commercial insurance covers the drivers named in the contract. Every car we deliver is an automatic, and renting a manual car in Phuket is rarely an option. Prices by model and the rest of the terms: how car rental with us works.
