Licences for Renting a Car in Thailand
The one document without which renting becomes a risk is an international driving permit. A home country licence on its own does not work here, and the consequences go beyond a fine. Here is which licence you need, how the categories differ, and what happens in an accident without the right documents.

An international driving permit is a booklet-translation issued against your valid national licence by the authority that issued it at home. It is quick to get, lasts three years, and works only together with the ordinary licence: neither has force without the other.
Rental firms on the island treat documents differently. Many hand over a car on a national licence and a passport, because for them the deposit matters more. The police see it another way: at the checkpoints near Chalong and on the road to Patong documents are checked regularly.
The fine for driving without a valid licence is small in money and unpleasant in its consequences. The fine is not the main thing: after an accident the insurer can refuse to pay if the driver had no right to drive under local rules. Then the repairs and the damage to others are on you.
A Thai licence is worth getting for people who live on the island long-term. For a two or three week holiday the national plus international pair is enough. Add a second driver to the contract straight away — otherwise they count as unauthorised at the wheel.
If you have no international permit and you still need a car, take the option with a driver, or a transfer. It costs more, but it does not create a situation where the insurance fails to work.
Why a home licence alone is not enough
Thailand recognises driving licences issued under the international convention. A national licence on its own does not fall under it if it is not in the Latin alphabet and is not accompanied by a translation of the prescribed form.
What that means on the road
As far as the Thai police are concerned, a driver without an IDP is driving without a licence. That is a fine at a checkpoint, and on this island they do check regularly.
It also leaves you without insurance in an accident: the insurer refuses if the driver had no right to drive. Repairs, other people property and the treatment of anyone injured then come out of your own pocket.
ВажноAn IDP is issued only in the country where your national licence was issued. You cannot arrange one in Phuket after you arrive — it is done in advance, at home.
Categories: B for a car, A for a scooter
In an international permit the categories are marked on the page of pictograms. Category B is a passenger car, category A a motorcycle or scooter.
The most common mistake
People take a scooter holding only category B, sure that their licence covers it. In the eyes of the law that is driving without a licence, with all that follows — a fine and a refusal from the insurer.
If you are planning both a car and a scooter, check before your trip that both categories are open. A is opened separately, and it has to be done before you fly.
- An IDP is valid only together with your national licence — carry both
- Category B is a car, A is a motorcycle or scooter
- An IDP usually lasts three years, but never longer than the national licence
- Keep the licence in the car, not in the hotel safe
What we ask for at handover
The international permit, the national licence and your passport. All three are more than a formality: an IDP without the national licence is invalid, and the document itself says so.
A second driver
If somebody else is going to drive, they must be added in advance with the same documents. An unlisted driver at the wheel is the same case as no licence at all: the insurance does not work.
Age and driving experience also affect the insurance terms — that is confirmed when you book.
Частые вопросы
Can I drive on my home licence alone?
No. The Thai police treat that as driving without a licence: a fine at a check and a refusal from the insurer after an accident.
Where do I get an international driving permit?
Only in the country that issued your national licence. You cannot arrange an IDP in Phuket once you have arrived.
Do I need a separate category for a scooter?
Yes, category A. Car category B does not cover a scooter — this is the most common mistake tourists make.
Do I have to carry my national licence too?
Yes. An IDP is only valid together with it, and the document itself says so.
Can I add a second driver?
Yes, in advance and with the same documents. An unlisted driver at the wheel voids the insurance just as a missing licence does.
