Kata is two bays, Kata and Kata Noi, joined by one road and hemmed in by hills. The streets are narrow, the buildings are tight together, and every way out goes uphill: north to Karon over the ridge, south to Nai Harn on a winding road.

How the two bays connect

Kata Noi is the smaller, quieter bay to the south, and it is reached by the same road that serves the main beach, climbing over a short headland between them. There is no alternative route: one road in, the same road out.

That has a practical effect at busy times. When the road is slow, it is slow for everybody, and there is no clever back way. Factor a few extra minutes into evening plans rather than looking for a shortcut that does not exist.

The upside is that you cannot get lost. Everything in Kata hangs off one artery, and the turnings are short dead ends down to the water or up to accommodation on the slopes.

Deliveries, tour minibuses and rubbish collection all use that same road, and when one of them stops, the traffic behind it stops too. Nobody sounds a horn about it, which tells you how normal it is. Leave a few minutes of slack in anything time-sensitive and the village stays pleasant.

Size is the deciding factor

Kata is the district where a smaller car genuinely makes your holiday better. The streets behind the beach were laid out for foot traffic and scooters, and they are lined with parked vehicles, delivery bikes and cafe tables.

A compact slips through and parks in gaps a larger car cannot use. A crossover is workable if you are careful. A seven-seater or a pickup will have you reversing back down a lane at some point, in front of an audience, and it will happen more than once.

The exception is accommodation on the slopes. Some driveways above Kata Noi are steep enough that a small underpowered car with four people aboard struggles on a hot day. If that is your situation, tell us where you are staying and we will match the car to the driveway rather than to the street.

Reversing is a skill you will use here more than anywhere else on the island. Cameras and sensors are genuinely useful in Kata, and if the car you are offered has them, take that one. It is the difference between a five-second manoeuvre and a three-point conversation with a delivery rider.

Where to leave the car

There is kerbside space along the road behind the main beach and a few small parking areas, and in high season all of it is contested from mid-morning onwards.

The strategy that works is simple: park once and walk. Kata is compact enough that a single well-chosen spot covers the beach, dinner and the shops. Circling for something closer costs more time than the walk you are avoiding.

Kata Noi has less space and fills earlier, and the road there has stretches where stopping blocks the only lane. If the parking area is full when you arrive, go back over the headland rather than improvising on the verge.

Overnight, ask your hotel. Small guesthouses here often have no parking at all, and the street outside may be cleared at night.

The winding road south

The road from Kata to Nai Harn is the most demanding piece of driving in the district: a proper series of climbs, bends and descents through the hills with a famous viewpoint partway along.

It is not dangerous and it is not difficult, but it does need attention. Take the bends slower than you think, because several tighten as you go through them. Use gear limiting on the descents. And expect to meet vehicles taking the racing line, because plenty of people here do.

The viewpoint car park fills at sunset, and cars stop on the road when it does. Treat parked vehicles on that road as an obstacle you should expect rather than a surprise.

Do this road for the first time in daylight and dry weather. It is a genuinely enjoyable drive when you know it, and a tense one at night in the rain when you do not.
