The pickup is the most Thai vehicle on the island. Builders drive them, farmers drive them, deliveries arrive in them and half the local families own one. Tourists rarely need one, but in three situations nothing else does the job.

Why a pickup on a holiday island
Case one is moving things. People relocating between villas, bringing furniture from a warehouse in Thalang, collecting a fridge from a shop that does not deliver. Nothing else in the fleet swallows a wardrobe.
Surf and gear
Case two is bulky kit. Longboards, kitesurf gear, diving cylinders, camping equipment. All of it goes in the bed without anyone negotiating over the back seat, and the salt water stays outside the cabin where it belongs.
Case three is rough access. Some villas up the hills and some plots inland end in an unsealed track that turns to ruts after heavy rain. A pickup treats that as a normal road.
There is a fourth case that comes up more than people expect: a long stay where the pickup is a tool rather than transport, used for one heavy week and then swapped for something ordinary. That is a perfectly sensible way to use one, and it avoids parking a work vehicle outside a restaurant every night.
What it means for the car
A pickup drives differently from anything else you might rent here. It is heavier, it leans more in bends and it takes longer to stop with an empty bed than you expect, because the weight is all at the front.
Size and parking
This is the honest downside. The length that makes the bed useful makes multi-storey car parks a problem and beachfront lanes an ordeal. Height barriers at shopping centres are also worth checking before you turn in, because reversing a long pickup back out of a ramp is a spectator sport.
Load in the bed
Whatever goes in the back needs strapping and covering. Rain arrives fast here and an unsecured load on a bend is genuinely dangerous. Straps and a tarpaulin are not optional extras, they are how the vehicle is meant to be used.
Who should not take one
If your holiday is beaches, restaurants and viewpoints, a pickup is the wrong tool. You will spend your time parking it rather than using it.
Other cases to avoid
Families with small children are better served by a crossover or a minivan, because a double-cab back seat is upright and short on legroom. First-time drivers on the left should also start with something smaller: learning a new side of the road and new dimensions at once is a lot for one week.

Where a pickup genuinely wins
On the open road it is calm and stable, and with a load in the back it settles down and rides better than empty. For a long run north or over the bridge it is a comfortable thing to be in.
Trips to the mainland
If your plan involves the mainland with gear, this is the vehicle. Long straight roads, plenty of ground clearance for the unsealed turn-offs and a bed that does not care about mud. Check first that your cover extends beyond the island, because not every arrangement does.
The bed after island use
Sand, salt and seawater in the bed are normal and easy to rinse. What is not normal is leaving wet gear in it for days: rinse it out at a fuel station when you fill up and hand the vehicle back the way you would want to receive it.
Cars that suit this
A double cab is the useful shape for most people: four proper seats plus a bed. A single cab has more load length and less use for anyone travelling with company.
An automatic is easier here for the same reasons it is easier in any Phuket vehicle, though working pickups are more often manual than the rest of the fleet, so say which you want when you ask.
A combination for a longer stay
