Do I Need an IDP to Rent a Car in Phuket?
Yes: to rent and drive a car in Phuket you need an International Driving Permit together with your national licence and passport, and Thailand is party to both the 1949 Geneva and 1968 Vienna conventions (UN Treaty Collection), so your country of issue decides which type you get. The answer changes only for licences from ASEAN countries, which Thailand recognises under the ASEAN agreement on domestic driving licences.

Short answer
An IDP is your licence rewritten in a standard international format, not a licence on its own. Police at a roadside check, the insurer after a scrape and we at handover all look for the same pair: the national card and the permit issued against it. Show one without the other and the documents do not count.
Which permit counts
Thailand takes both permit types: it joined the 1949 Geneva convention and the 1968 Vienna one, the UN Treaty Collection shows. It comes from the country that issued your licence and repeats the categories printed on your card. If your licence covers cars, the permit covers cars; it adds nothing your own card does not already allow.
When the answer changes
Licences from ASEAN countries are recognised in Thailand under the ASEAN agreement, so the rule above works differently for drivers from the region. The pages on the Malaysian licence in Thailand and the Singapore licence in Thailand explain what those drivers bring. For every other country, the licence plus the permit is the set. The Dutch licence in Thailand and the Canadian licence in Thailand pages show what that looks like in practice.
What that means for the rental
Every name on the agreement needs the full set: passport, national licence, IDP. That goes for the second driver too, who is added in advance with the same documents. Swap seats halfway through a day trip without adding your partner first, and the insurance no longer covers the car.
The permit does not change the car itself. The cars are automatic, first-class commercial insurance is included, and the class depends on your luggage and the roads you plan to drive, not on your paperwork.
Handover happens wherever the car is delivered. We look at the passport, the licence and the permit together, check that the names match, then walk round the car with you: body, tyres, air conditioning, fuel level. You leave with the rental agreement in hand, and the three documents go back in your bag, not into the hotel safe.
Tell us on WhatsApp who will drive and for which dates, and we can have the car at arrivals, your hotel or your villa at any hour: automatic, first-class commercial insurance, refundable deposit, the total for your dates fixed in chat. The booking form works too, and the page on car rental in Phuket lists what the rental includes.
Step by step
The permit is sorted at home before you fly. Everything else happens when the car is handed over.
- Apply for the IDP in the country that issued your licence — Thailand does not issue one against a foreign card
- Check that the licence, the permit and the passport carry the same name — the three are read as one set
- Pack the physical licence card, not a photo on your phone — the permit is void without the card
- Name every driver before delivery — an unlisted driver at the wheel voids the insurance
- Walk round the car with us at handover — body, tyres, air conditioning and fuel level go on record
- Keep all three documents in the car — a roadside check asks for the whole set
Common mistakes
Most document trouble in Phuket starts at home, with a permit left in a drawer or a licence card left in the hotel safe.
The first mistake is bringing the IDP and leaving the national card behind: the permit alone translates nothing, and a police officer or an insurer treats it that way. The second is letting a friend drive a stretch when only one name is on the agreement. The third is deciding the permit is optional because a rental desk somewhere did not ask for it; the police and the insurer still do. A fourth is agreeing on a second driver in conversation but not on paper: the partner who takes the evening run back from the beach needs the same three documents on the agreement. For two wheels the rules differ: see do I need a motorcycle licence to rent a scooter in Phuket.
ImportantInsurers ask for the licence and the permit together. A missing licence or an unlisted driver voids the cover, and then even a small scrape in a car park is paid for by the driver.

Common questions
Do I need an international driving permit in Thailand?
Yes, unless your licence is from an ASEAN country. Carry whichever permit your country issues for Thailand, with your national licence and passport: a UK licence gets the 1968 one (gov.uk), a US licence the 1949 one from AAA. The permit alone is not a licence.
Can I rent a car in Thailand without an IDP?
Some desks hand over keys without it, but police checks and insurers ask for the permit with the licence. Without it the insurance is at risk after any accident. ASEAN licences are the exception.
Is an IDP valid on its own?
No. The IDP only works together with the national licence it was issued against. Bring the physical card, not a photo or a scan.
Does the second driver need an IDP too?
Yes. The second driver is added in advance with the same documents: passport, national licence and IDP. An unlisted driver at the wheel voids the insurance.
Which IDP does Thailand recognise?
Both types are valid, 1949 and 1968, because Thailand signed up to both conventions (UN Treaty Collection). It is obtained in the country that issued your licence, before you travel.
Can you deliver the car at night?
Yes. We deliver to arrivals, a hotel, villa or apartment anywhere in Phuket at any hour. Send the dates on WhatsApp or through the booking form.
