Accidents in Thailand: Step by Step
A crash in a foreign country frightens people more than the crash itself. The procedure here is simple and strict: do not move the car, record everything, wait for the police, call us. Here it is step by step, along with what you must not do.

First, see whether anybody is hurt. If there are injuries, call 1669, the ambulance service. Then 1155 — the tourist police, who speak English and help with the paperwork.
Second, photograph everything before the cars are moved: their position on the road, the damage to both, the number plates, the markings and the signs around. Those pictures settle the question of fault when the two sides tell different stories.
Third, tell the rental company. It has its own insurance agent who comes to the scene and files the claim. He often arrives faster than the police and speaks Thai with the other party, which makes everything much simpler.
Do not agree to sort it out here and now in cash before you have spoken to the rental company. Even if the sum seems small, the damage will still surface when the car is returned, and you will end up paying twice.
If the accident involves a scooter, be ready for the larger vehicle to be treated as the one at fault by default. That is exactly why photographs from the scene and a police report matter more than any verbal agreement.
The procedure
People first: check that everyone is unhurt and call an ambulance if needed. Medical care is paid for, and this is where your travel insurance works.
Do not move the car
The vehicles stay where they are until the police arrive — their positions establish what happened. There is one exception: if the car is blocking traffic and creating a danger.
Record everything
Photographs: the wider scene, the position of both cars, all the damage close up, the number plates, the road markings and any signs nearby.
Make the call
To us, straight away. The car is registered to the rental company, and some things are settled faster through us.

Leave the scene. That turns the situation from an insurance matter into a criminal one, even if you were not at fault.
Settle without the police
Verbal agreements with the other party have no force when the claim is filed. Without a report the incident does not exist for the insurer.
Admit fault on the spot
The police establish the circumstances from the facts. An emotional it was my fault at the scene can cost you dearly later.

What happens next
