What rain looks like on the island

It does not drizzle here, it falls. Visibility drops to a few dozen metres within a minute, wipers at full speed stop coping, and oncoming cars are visible only as headlights.

Half an hour later it ends just as sharply and steam rises off the tarmac. That is why residents do not push through a wall of water: they turn in under the first canopy, drink a coffee, and set off once the band has passed.

Where the water stands longest

Flat ground by the sea, the Patong seafront, the approaches to Chalong, parts of the streets in Phuket Town, drains slowly. A road can look passable and be sill deep a hundred metres further on. If nobody ahead of you is driving through, that is a warning rather than an invitation.

Rain also falls unevenly across the island. The west coast around Patong and Kamala catches most of the water while the eastern side near Chalong often stays dry in the same hour. So driving out of the rain is sometimes faster than waiting it out, though that has to be judged on the spot rather than from a forecast.

What it means for the car

Look at the tyres first. Tread depth decides more on wet tarmac than engine power or drive layout: a worn tyre floats on a film of water at moderate speed, and after that the steering wheel means nothing.

Second are the wipers and the demister. Rubber hardens quickly in this heat and the cabin fogs instantly in a downpour. Check the air conditioning on the screen setting while you are still on the rental forecourt, because without it you will be driving with a window open and a wet shoulder.

Ground clearance and depth

A crossover gives you margin on a flooded section but does not turn a pool into a ford. The rule of thumb is simple: water above the middle of the wheel means you do not drive. An engine stopped in water is not a one minute problem, it is a recovery truck and a long conversation with an insurer.

Descents deserve separate attention. On the wet hill road between Patong and Kamala you brake on the engine and early, not with the pedal in the bend: on a film of water the wheel locks and the car carries straight on.

What to do when the rain catches you

If a downpour arrives while you are driving, use a short routine that works the same in town and on the highway. Slow down, switch on dipped headlights, open the gap to three car lengths and look for somewhere to pull in.

Choose a canopy, a fuel station or a shopping centre rather than a verge. Twenty minutes there costs you nothing and removes the whole problem, while twenty minutes crawling through a wall of water gains nothing at all.

Turn the air conditioning to the screen and keep it running while you wait, so that the glass is clear when you pull out again rather than fogged.

If you have stopped on the verge

Put on the side lights and the hazards, get as far left as you can, and do not stand under trees, because branches break easily here in a squall. Rejoin the traffic slowly, because the cars behind will see you late.

One habit worth adopting from the first week: check the sky before a long drive rather than after it. The bands are visible from a distance, and setting off ten minutes later often means driving on tarmac that has already started to dry.

Parking in a downpour

Parking by the sea in the rainy season is its own subject. Low areas beside the beaches flood quickly, and a car left in the morning on level ground can be standing in water up to the wheel rims by lunchtime.

Covered car parks at the shopping centres beat any street parking on those days. On top of staying dry you gain time, because you spend the band of rain walking around inside rather than sitting in the car.

Do not leave the car under palms or old trees at all. A squall brings down coconuts and dead branches, and that kind of damage is explained to the rental company slowly and without pleasure.

Check where the water runs before you choose a space on a slope. Somewhere that looks fine in the dry becomes the route the runoff takes, and coming back to find the car standing in it is avoidable.

A bike in the rainy season

A scooter in a downpour is many times more dangerous than a car. The problem is not really the water but the mixture of sand and oil the first rain lifts to the surface: grip falls sharply, especially on the painted markings and the manhole covers.

Tactics on two wheels

If the rain has started and you are on a bike, find shelter immediately rather than trying to reach the hotel. A rain cape from the nearest shop costs very little and solves the comfort problem, but it does nothing at all for grip.

For anyone staying on Phuket for a long period, it makes sense to keep a car as the main transport through the wet months and use the bike in the dry windows. That is not caution for its own sake, it is simply cheaper than one visit to a clinic.

Planning trips in this period is easier in the morning. Bands of rain more often arrive after midday and towards evening, while the first half of the day is usually calm. Long runs north or across to the mainland are logically started early, so that you are not coming back in darkness and water at the same time.
