How it actually works here
A child seat in a rental is not an item that happens to be lying in the boot of every car. It is reserved together with the vehicle, and in high season the right group may simply not be free. So when you book, do not say the child's age and leave it there — give the weight and the height, because those are what determine the group.
Fit it yourself and check it
Whoever delivers the car can install the seat, and you should still check it yourself before anyone sits in it. Grip the seat at the belt path and push it sideways: real movement means it is not tight enough. A seat that slides across the bench in a hard stop is doing considerably less than the parents think it is.
Bring your own if you have strong feelings about it. Airlines carry child seats free on most tickets, and a familiar seat that you know how to fit removes every variable at once. It is bulky, it is a nuisance at the carousel, and plenty of parents decide it is worth it anyway.
What it means for the car
The class is chosen by the geometry of the rear row, not by the number of seats. A child seat eats width, and an adult sitting next to one in a small car travels uncomfortably for the whole holiday. For a family with one child a normal mid-size car is fine; for two seats plus an adult in the back, the maths changes and you need something wider.
The boot is the other constraint, because a pushchair does not fold into nothing. Count it separately from the luggage rather than assuming it will slot in around the cases, and if there is also an airport transfer with full-size suitcases on the same day, that is the day the class has to cover.
One small detail that matters more in this climate than people expect: rear air vents. The back row of a car parked in the sun is genuinely hot, and a child strapped into a seat cannot move away from it. Ask whether the second row has its own vents, and let the car cool before anyone is fastened in.
TipLet the car stand with the doors open and the air conditioning running for a couple of minutes before you strap a child in. Buckles and the metal parts of a seat that has been in the sun get hot enough to hurt, and the back of a closed car in this heat takes longer to cool than the front.
The roads where a seat matters most
Phuket is an island of hills. The road from Patong over to Kathu, the winding approach to Nai Thon, the climbs up to the viewpoints — on those stretches the braking is sharper and the bends tighter than anything on flat ground. A child who is not properly restrained gets thrown around on those roads in a way that is unpleasant at best.
The second category is the coastal traffic, which looks harmless and is not. Speeds are low, but scooters appear from gaps and stops are sudden, and low-speed sudden stops are exactly what a seat is designed for. Most of what happens to visiting families here happens at under thirty kilometres an hour.
The third is the main highway north, where the speeds are properly high and the traffic behaves like motorway traffic. If your trip includes the airport, the bridge or a mainland excursion, that road is the reason to get the seat right rather than to improvise something.

The drive from the airport with children
The most common scenario is landing, collecting the car and driving to the hotel, and with children it is complicated by everyone being tired. Shortening that first journey is worth real money in goodwill. If the hotel is in the south of the island the drive takes over an hour, and after a long flight that hour is the hardest part of the day.
Two things make it easier. Having the seat already fitted when the car is handed over saves a fumbling installation in an airport car park with a tired toddler in your arms. And planning one stop on the way — a fuel station with a shop, a café with air conditioning — turns a long drive into two short ones.
If your flight lands late, say so when booking and give the flight number. A handover arranged around the flight moves when the aircraft does, which matters far more with children than without them.
Documents and cover
Having children in the car does not change what the driver needs: a national licence, an International Driving Permit, a passport and the deposit. Carry the documents with you rather than leaving them at the hotel, because they are checked at roadside posts regardless of who is in the back seat.
It is also worth naming a second driver on the contract if two of you will share the driving, and doing it at the start rather than mid-trip. On a family holiday somebody always ends up taking a turn, and an unnamed driver at the wheel voids the cover completely — with the children in the car, that is not a risk worth running for convenience.
