Cape Panwa to Patong by Car in Phuket
Cape Panwa to Patong is a drive across the island from its south-east corner to the west coast: north along the one road on the spine of the cape to the edge of Phuket Town, then west through Kathu and over the pass into Patong. The town to Patong part alone is about 20 min of driving when the road is clear, and the cape road and the town streets come on top of it. At the hours when through traffic and the school run meet on the climb, the pass is the slow part, and a detour to the north can beat the direct road.

How do you drive from Panwa to Patong?
In three pieces. The cape, the town, the pass.
First you leave Panwa the only way there is, along the road that runs up the middle of the cape. Phuket Town begins right behind its base, so within a short drive you are among traffic lights and town streets. From there you head west through Kathu, climb the pass from the Kathu side and drop steeply into Patong. The last stretch, from town to Patong, is about twenty minutes of driving on a clear road. Everything before it depends on the hour and on how busy the town is.
Why does the same drive take so different times?
Because the pass is a funnel. At the times of day when through traffic and the school run reach the climb together, it slows to a crawl, and then the northern detour turns out quicker than the direct road. The middle of the day is the easy window. We tell people staying on Panwa the same thing: plan the Patong evening, but leave before the rush, not in it.
If you are staying on Panwa and want a car for days out to the west coast, we deliver to your hotel or villa on the cape at any hour: automatic, first-class commercial insurance, a refundable deposit from 5,000–30,000 ฿ depending on the model, and the total for your dates fixed in chat. Send the dates and the address in the chat, or use the booking form.
What that means for the car
On Panwa a car is a condition of the stay, not a convenience. The housing sits on slopes, and the driveways to most of it climb at an angle, so the car you choose has to handle the start of the day before it ever reaches the pass.
For a couple with a hotel on the main road an economy automatic does the whole route. For a villa up one of the steep spurs, with a family and a boot of shopping, a crossover makes the first and last hundred metres calmer. On the pass itself any class works, as long as it goes down in a low gear.
The town section asks for a different kind of attention. Traffic lights, turning lorries, scooters filtering on both sides, and in the old quarter narrow one-way streets with marked kerbs. You only skirt the edge of it on this route, so keep to the main roads towards Kathu and leave the old town for a day of its own.
Where to park when you get to Patong
This is where the drive from Panwa most often goes wrong, not on the road. Patong's central spaces are paid and gone by lunchtime in high season, and on a busy evening finding one can take two laps of the centre.
Plan the stop before you set off. Either arrive in the morning and take a paid lot near the beach, or leave the car on a side street further back from the sea and walk down. The beach road itself is watched.
- Morning arrival — paid lots near the beach still have space
- Evening out — a side street further back, then walk
- Hotel or restaurant parking — ask ahead, it saves the laps
- Red and white kerb — never, even for five minutes
ImportantTow trucks work the Patong beach road steadily. A car left on a red and white kerb does not stay there long, and getting it back means a fine plus half a day at the pound, which is a long way from Panwa.
The pass: how to take the descent into Patong
Coming from Kathu, the long side of the pass is the climb, and the drop into Patong is shorter but steep. Change down before the top and stay in a low gear all the way to the bottom, where the town starts abruptly.
Keep to your lane on the bends and let scooters go by on the inside. On the way back it flips. The climb out of Patong is short, and the long descent is towards Kathu, the side with a runaway lane for lorries, which is there for a reason. Low gear again, and no riding the brake. The same road is described in more detail in our page on the Patong to Phuket Town road, from the other end.
Driving back to Panwa after dark
The return is the same three pieces in reverse, and at night the town part is the quick one. The cape road is calm, but the spurs up to villas on the slopes are steep, so take the last turn slowly, especially after rain.
If the day out is the whole point of the car, also look at the Khao Khad observation tower on the hill above the cape and the aquarium at its tip, both minutes from home. For the arrival itself, see Phuket Airport to Panwa by car; for the area, car rental in Panwa.
Renting a car for this drive
Three pages answer the usual questions before a drive like this: how much a car costs per day, how big the deposit is and what the included insurance covers. The car is brought to Patong, Rawai, Kata or any other area at any hour, night flights included. Every car we deliver has an automatic gearbox, so there is no need to look for a manual car. The price of every model for three days and for a month is on one page with prices and rental terms. If you are staying in Cape Panwa, start with renting a car in Cape Panwa. Common questions
How long is the drive from Panwa to Patong?
The Phuket Town to Patong part alone is about 20 minutes when the road is clear, plus the cape road and the town streets before it. At rush hour the pass slows it down noticeably.
Which road goes from Cape Panwa to Patong?
The single road along the cape to Phuket Town, then west through Kathu and over the pass into Patong. At peak hours a detour to the north can be quicker than the pass.
Is the pass between Kathu and Patong difficult?
It is a normal mountain road: a long climb from Kathu and a steep drop into Patong. Take the descents in a low gear so the brakes stay cool, and keep to your lane on the bends.
Do I need a car if I stay on Cape Panwa?
Yes, unless you plan to stay inside a large resort. Housing on the cape sits on slopes, and the shops, the town and the west coast beaches are all a drive away.
Where should I park in Patong coming from Panwa?
A paid lot near the beach if you arrive in the morning, or a side street further back in the evening. Never on a red and white kerb, where tow trucks work.
Can you deliver a rental car to a hotel on Cape Panwa?
Yes, to any hotel or villa on the cape, day or night. Send the address in the chat, and we inspect the car together with you on arrival.
