Phuket Airport to Patong by Car
The drive from Phuket Airport to Patong takes 40–45 min in calm traffic, south along the west road via Thalang and then over the Kathu/Patong hill pass. At rush hour or in heavy rain it takes longer, and most of the lost time is spent on the pass.

How long it takes and which road
With a clear road the run from the terminal to Patong is 40–45 min. You leave the airport heading south on the west road through Thalang, turn west at Kathu and climb the hill pass that drops you straight into town. Until the pass the driving is simple: keep left, hold your lane and let the scooters filter past on both sides.
Where the traffic stops
The run slows at rush hour, when commuters fill the west road around Thalang and Kathu, and in rain, when everyone on the pass drops to a crawl and the gaps between cars open up. A tropical downpour cuts visibility to a few car lengths and fills the gutters within minutes, and the same route suddenly feels long.
If this is your first drive on the left, the pass is the part to take slowly. The descent into Patong is steep, the bends are tight, and trucks and tour vans use it all day. Our notes on left-hand driving cover the habits worth fixing before you pull out of the airport car park.
What that means for the car
Take an automatic. On the pass a hill start behind a stalled van is likely, and on the way down you want the low range, L or B on the selector, doing the braking instead of the pads. A small engine copes with two people and cabin bags; a full car with suitcases climbs slowly, and every overtake on the hill turns into a decision you do not need after a flight.
Count the bags before the people. A hatchback suits a couple travelling light. A family with large suitcases and a stroller needs a sedan or a compact SUV, otherwise something rides on a lap all the way over the pass.
Switch the air conditioning on while the car is still parked, before you load it. A cabin that stays warm on a slow climb is the quickest way to lose patience. In the wet season glance at the tyres too: the descent into Patong is where worn tread shows first, because you brake and turn at the same time on wet asphalt.
A local driving to Patong with luggage picks an automatic compact SUV or a mid-size sedan: enough power for the pass, enough clearance for flooded kerbs, still narrow enough for the side streets behind the beach road. Why the small class suits the bay is on economy car rental in Patong.
If you are landing at Phuket Airport and heading to Patong, we can have the car waiting at arrivals: automatic, first-class commercial insurance, refundable deposit, the total for your dates fixed in chat. Send the dates on WhatsApp or through the booking form; the page on car rental in Patong explains how the district works once you arrive.
Car at the airport or car at the hotel?
Both options work, and the right one depends on when you land and who is travelling with you.
Collecting the car at arrivals makes sense after a night landing, with children, or with more bags than a taxi boot takes. You walk out, sign, load once and drive at your own pace, with no second handover to arrange.
A taxi or Grab to the hotel, with the car delivered there later, makes sense when you are exhausted, landing in the dark and have never driven on the left. Your first run over the pass then happens rested and in daylight, and the car turns up at the hotel at whatever hour suits you.
- Night landing with children — take the car at arrivals, one transfer instead of two
- First time on the left — taxi to the hotel, car the next morning
- Lots of luggage — car at arrivals, the bags go in only once
- Long-haul flight behind you — delivery to the hotel, first drive after sleep
Where to park in Patong
Parking in central Patong is scarce, and in high season the free spots are gone by lunchtime. Work around it: leave the car at the hotel and walk to the beach road, or drive into the centre in the morning and be out before the evening crowd arrives.
There are 2 ways out of the area and both go uphill, one back over the pass towards Kathu and the airport, the other north along the coast. On a busy evening both queue, so leave earlier than the map suggests. Kamala is 15 min over the pass to the north, the easiest trip out of town once you have wheels. Travelling as a group of five or more, see minivan rental in Patong for where a long car fits in town.
ImportantDo not leave the car on a red and white kerb or across a driveway in Patong. Enforcement here means a clamp or a tow truck, and getting the car back costs a fine plus half a day spent collecting it.
The way back to the airport
Patong to Phuket Airport is the same 40–45 min in calm traffic, more at rush hour or in rain. Plan backwards from check-in: the drive, then a margin for the pass, then time to hand the car over and walk to the terminal.
Returning the car
The handover is quick when the car comes back as you received it. Check the fuel level your contract asks for, then photograph the car from every side and the dashboard with the fuel gauge before you give up the keys. Walk round the car together with our driver; photos from pickup and from return settle any question about a scratch on the spot.

Common questions
How far is Patong from Phuket Airport?
About 40–45 min by car in calm traffic, south on the west road via Thalang and then over the Kathu/Patong hill pass. Allow extra time at rush hour and when it rains.
Taxi or rental car from Phuket Airport to Patong?
For a single transfer, a taxi or Grab is simpler. If you plan to drive around the island during your stay, a car at arrivals saves a second transfer and puts you on the road from the first hour. We fix the total for your dates in chat on WhatsApp.
Can you deliver the car at the airport at night?
Yes. We deliver at arrivals or to the hotel at any hour, night landings included. Send your flight and dates on WhatsApp and the car will be waiting when you come out.
Do I need an IDP to rent a car at Phuket Airport?
Yes. Bring your passport, your national licence and an International Driving Permit. A second driver has to be added in advance. Our driving licence rules page explains the details.
Is it hard to drive from the airport to Patong?
Not hard, but the last part needs attention. The west road is straightforward; the hill pass into Patong is steep with tight bends. Keep left, use low gear on the descent and let faster traffic go by.
