Why you want a car here

Phuket Town is the one part of the island where you could survive without a car, and the one part where having one changes your range the most. The centre itself is walkable: the Sino-Portuguese streets, the cafes, the markets, the Sunday walking street. Everything beyond it is not.

Life without one is harder than it looks

From the town, every beach is a drive. So is every viewpoint, every temple worth the trip and the large supermarkets people actually shop in. Buses and on-demand cars exist, but they set your timetable rather than the other way round, and the last leg home at night is the part that grinds people down.

Being in the middle of the island is the real prize. Nowhere is far. You can be on the west coast for sunset and back for dinner in town, which is a combination nobody staying in Kata is doing.

Weekends

On Sunday evening the walking street closes several central streets entirely and the surrounding parking fills long before it starts. If you are going, park a few streets out and walk in, or you will spend the evening circling.

Getting out of town

West

The road to Patong climbs over the hill and is the busiest exit from town. It is a good road, but it is also where new drivers meet their first proper Phuket descent, so take it in daylight the first time.

North

The main north road runs straight to the airport and the northern beaches, and it is the fastest road on the island. It is also where the speed cameras live, so keep to the posted limits.

South

Chalong, Rawai and Nai Harn are a short run down the same corridor, which makes the southern beaches an easy afternoon rather than an expedition.
