Is a Suzuki Ciaz a good car for Phuket?

For most couples and small families, yes. The Ciaz sits in the economy class but drives like a slightly bigger car: a long cabin, a back seat where adults do not sit with their knees up, and a proper boot behind a lid rather than a hatch. On an island of short hops between beaches, that is exactly the right amount of car.

Why do people ask for it by name? Usually because they rented one before, in Thailand or elsewhere in Asia, and liked the space for the money. We understand the logic. A sedan's closed boot also has a practical advantage here: bags, shopping and a laptop stay out of sight and out of the sun when you park at a beach.

When it is the wrong choice

Five adults, or four with big suitcases for two weeks, will outgrow it on the airport run. A villa at the top of a steep concrete drive is the other case, because a low sedan can touch its nose where the drive leaves the road. For those, a crossover or a minivan makes more sense.

What that means on Phuket's roads

Hills first. An economy car handles every pass on the island and the long climb to the Big Buddha; with four people and the air conditioning on full it climbs more slowly, and that is all. On the way down use the low position on the gear selector instead of holding the brake, because light cars overheat their brakes just as heavy ones do.

In town, the length of a sedan is noticeable in the narrowest lanes of Patong and Kata, where a short hatchback turns more easily. Everywhere else it parks like any small car, and on long flat roads such as the highway to the airport it is quieter and steadier than a city hatch.

Fuel is the quiet saving. Over a long rental a small engine keeps the petrol bill a minor line, which is why this class is a common choice for stays of a month or more. How much luggage fits in a Ciaz?

Two large suitcases go into the boot of an economy car without touching the seats, with hand luggage on top. A sedan's boot is long rather than tall, so soft bags stack better than a third hard case. With four people and four big cases, the fourth ends up on someone's lap, which is the moment to take a crossover instead.

What do I need to rent it?

Your passport, your national licence and an International Driving Permit to go with it; drivers from ASEAN countries drive on their own licence. Drivers must be 21 or older with at least a year of driving. A second driver goes on the agreement before the trip, since an unlisted driver has no insurance.

At handover we walk round the car with you: body, tyres, air conditioning and fuel level, with the agreement in hand. It takes a few minutes, whether we meet you at the arrivals exit after a night flight or at the hotel the next morning.

Ciaz or a hatchback?

If you are staying in the tight streets of Patong or Kata and rarely leave them, a short hatchback is a little easier to live with. If you will spend more time on the road, visiting the north, the south and perhaps the mainland, the sedan's space and calmer ride on the highway win.

Parking tips the balance for some people. In the high season beach spaces in Patong and Kata go early, and a sedan needs a slightly longer gap than a hatchback. Around Karon, Bang Tao and Chalong, where there is more room, nobody notices the difference, and the bigger boot keeps a day's beach kit out of sight.
