How Does the Car Rental Deposit Work in Phuket?

Short answer

The deposit is security for the car while it is in your hands, not a charge. It is taken at the moment of handover, sits untouched for the whole rental and comes back when you return the keys. Its size depends on the car and the dates and is agreed in chat before delivery, together with the rental total.

Why the handover record matters

At handover we walk round the car together and write down the state of the body, the tyres, the air conditioning and the fuel level. That record is the reference point for the return: whatever was already there is not yours to pay for, and the same walk-round at the end decides if the deposit goes back in full.

What can delay the return

Three things. Damage found at the final inspection that is not on the handover record. Fuel below the level at which you received the car. Traffic fines that reach us after the rental, since a fine can arrive later than the car does. Those are the cases that can hold the deposit up.

What that means for the rental

Because the deposit is settled against the handover record, the inspection deserves a few minutes of your attention. Point out marks on the bumpers and wheels, take photos of anything you notice, and look at the fuel gauge before signing. The rental agreement stays with you, so the record travels in your bag as well as ours.
