What Insurance Is Included When Renting a Car in Phuket?

Short answer
The rental comes with first-class commercial insurance. You do not have to shop for a policy or pick between levels at the car: the cover is part of the agreement, and what it includes is explained before you put your name on it. Read it the way you would at home: who may drive, what the documents must be, and what sits outside the cover.
The two conditions that keep it working
The first is the driver. The insurance follows the names on the agreement, so every person who will drive is added in advance with passport, national licence and IDP. A friend who takes the wheel for a short run without being listed is driving an uninsured car.
The second is the documents. The licence has to be with the driver, valid, and backed by the IDP; a licence left in the hotel room means the cover no longer applies at that moment. What that means for the rental
Because the cover is tied to people and papers, the choices that matter happen at booking. Decide who will drive before you book, send their names, and bring the documents for each of them to the handover.
At handover the terms of the cover are explained before you sign, and we walk round the car together: body, tyres, air conditioning and fuel level go into the record. That record is also what the deposit is settled against; the page how the deposit works explains the return.
Some costs sit outside the insurance by design. The wrong fuel in the tank is paid for separately, so check the grade on the sticker by the filler flap before you fill up, especially in a car you have never driven before.
Driving habits play their part too. Traffic keeps to the left, scooters pass on both sides and hill roads turn slick in rain; the notes on left-hand driving are worth a read before the first trip out of the airport.

Keeping the cover valid comes down to a few habits, from the first message to the moment you hand the keys back.
- Name every driver when you book — the insurance covers only the people on the agreement
- Pack passport, national licence and IDP for each driver — a missing licence voids the cover
- Check that licence and IDP stay valid for the whole rental — an expired licence is not a valid one
- Ask about any part of the cover you are unsure of before signing — that is when it is explained
- Keep the licence on you, not in the hotel safe — it has to be with the driver
- Fill up with the grade on the filler-flap sticker — the wrong fuel is paid for separately
Common mistakes
Insurance trouble on holiday rarely comes from the policy itself. It comes from who was driving and what was in their pocket.
The first mistake is handing the keys to a partner or friend who was never added to the agreement. The second is carrying the IDP but leaving the national licence behind, or the other way round. The third is assuming the insurance pays for anything that happens to the car, fuel mistakes included, when the wrong fuel is paid separately. A fourth is signing without asking about the parts of the cover you are unsure of, then reading the terms properly only after something has happened.

Police assistance and listed drivers
Police assistance is included. Insurance cover applies only to drivers listed on the rental agreement with their passport, national driving licence and International Driving Permit (IDP). Before signing, check that each person who will drive is listed and has the required documents.
Trips off Phuket must be agreed in chat before the trip. Some destinations require extra cover. Trips to Krabi, Phang Nga and Surat Thani come without a surcharge, and they are agreed in chat in advance like any other.
