Whole stay or only the driving days?
Count the driving days first. A day with a beach in the south, a viewpoint and a market in town is a car day; a day by the hotel pool with dinner on foot is not. If the car days sit together, take the car for that block and use rides for the rest of the stay.
Starting the rental after the first day is often the sensible choice. After a night flight the first day is rarely a driving day, and the car can come to your hotel when you are ready instead of meeting you at arrivals. You pay only for the days you have the car.
The block can also grow. If the trip turns out to need more car days, write in chat before the return day; if the car is free, the extra days are added and the total is fixed again for the new dates.
What does a short rental cost per day?
Look at your class in the table above. The daily rate is set in steps by the rental length: two to three days, four to seven, eight to fourteen, fifteen to twenty-one, and a month or more, and the month column is the lowest in every class. In some classes a week costs less per day than two or three days, in others the two columns are close, so compare the cells for your own class.
Each rental adds its own lines on top of the rate: the delivery to your point and the refundable deposit, held at handover and returned with the car. Two short rentals mean two deliveries and two handovers, which is why one block of driving days is usually simpler than two separate ones.

Is a car worth it for just two days?
Yes, if both days are full driving days. A loop of the island is a comfortable day's driving with an early start, and the second day can take the north or a string of viewpoints. Two days fall in the first column of the table.
No, if the two days are mostly the airport run and a dinner out. Ride-hailing apps win when you stay in one bay, walk to dinner and need only the airport transfer.
A single day works as well, for one big day out from a walkable beach base. Book the delivery time the evening before, so the car is at the door for an early start and the day is spent driving rather than waiting.

How many trips a day make a car worthwhile?
About three or more trips a day is the line. At that point a car with a fixed price beats ride-hailing fares that change with demand in tourist hours, and day trips, children or luggage tip the balance further towards the car.
Below that line, rides are enough within one beach area and by day. Buses run from Phuket Town rather than along the beaches, and in the evening you rely on apps and taxis, which is worth counting on the days without a car.
How do I book only the days I need?
Send the dates of the driving days, the place where the car should meet you and the number of people in WhatsApp, or run the availability search with those dates. The answer names the car, the total for those days and the deposit, with delivery on its own line.
If the plan is still loose, book the core block now and extend in chat later; changing dates is a message in the same chat, and no prepayment is taken on the request.
