Where a compact beats everything else

Phuket Town was not built for cars. The streets are narrow, a row of parked vehicles takes half the carriageway, and turning around happens wherever a gap appears. A small car moves through that calmly while a long one spends the afternoon performing three-point turns in front of an audience.

The same is true of the beach districts. The lanes behind Kata and Karon are the width of one car and a scooter, with a wall on one side and a drainage channel on the other. In a compact you take them at walking pace and think about nothing; in something wide, every passing scooter is a decision.

And then there is the parking itself, which is the daily reality of driving here. Spaces on the island were laid out for the cars that were common when the streets were built, and a short body opens up a whole set of places that stay closed to everyone else. Over a week that is measured in hours, not minutes.

What it means for the car

A small engine in the tropics works under a load nobody thinks about at home. The air conditioning runs constantly, the climbs come one after another, and with four passengers on the pull up to a viewpoint there is nothing left in reserve. Overtaking on an uphill stretch is where that becomes dangerous rather than merely slow.

Plan the overtakes out of your day

The fix is not to drive faster but to stop needing to. Leave a bigger gap, accept sitting behind a slow lorry for a kilometre, and take the overtake only on a flat or descending straight where the car actually has something to give. This is a much better habit here than at home, because the oncoming traffic includes scooters that are harder to see than cars.

The other consequence is heat. A small engine in a queue on a hot afternoon with the air conditioning at full is at its hardest working point. Check the temperature gauge occasionally in slow traffic, and if the cooling starts to fade at idle, that is worth reporting rather than living with for a fortnight.

Who this class does not suit

Four adults with suitcases. The seats will take them; the boot will not, and the transfer from the airport turns into a game of luggage tetris with bags on knees. It is a miserable first hour of a holiday and completely predictable in advance.

It also does not suit anyone staying up a steep concrete driveway or at the end of a rutted lane. The clearance is urban, and the break-over at the top of a ramp is where the underside makes a noise you will remember. If the access to your accommodation is the difficult part of the day, take something taller.

Everyone else — couples, small families with one or two cases, anyone based in the town or the beach districts, anyone renting for a month and paying for their own fuel — is exactly who this class was built for.

Parking a small car in tight places

The open lots at shopping centres and markets make no difference to a compact — it parks anywhere. The interesting places are the ones where a short body is a genuine advantage: the side streets of Kata and Karon, the lanes of the old town, and the courtyards behind cafés in Rawai where the only space is the one nobody else could use.

Take the shade when you find it. A car left in full sun for an afternoon here becomes genuinely unpleasant, the steering wheel unusable for the first minutes, and the interior plastics age faster. Shade is worth a short walk more often than people expect.

The prohibitions are the same everywhere on the island and worth learning once. A red-and-white kerb means no stopping at any hour. Blocking a private entrance in a residential lane gets you moved, not ticketed, and by people who are not gentle with the car. And in the wet season, a low spot near a canal is where the water gathers first.

• Film the bumper and sills at handover — that is where scratches are found on this class
• Stay out of deep puddles; the clearance is less than it looks from the driver's seat
• Count the luggage before booking, because four people with suitcases will not fit
• Do not overtake on a climb with a full car; there is no power in reserve

Compact or crossover: deciding in a minute

Do not look at the route. Look at the entrance to where you are staying, because you deal with that twice a day, while the rough track to a beach happens once a week. If the driveway is a steep ramp or a broken lane, take the taller car and stop thinking about it.

If the access is flat and paved, the decision flips to luggage. Two people with two cases: compact, comfortably. Four adults with four cases: not this class, whatever the seat count says. A family with children and a pushchair sits somewhere in the middle, and the answer usually depends on whether the pushchair folds flat.

The third question is how long you are staying and who pays for fuel. On a week the difference is small enough to ignore.
