A couple: town, beaches, short trips

For two people, an economy car is almost always the right answer and it is not a compromise. It parks in the gaps larger cars drive past, it is cheap to run, and nothing about island driving asks for more than it has.

The narrow streets behind Patong, Kata and the old town were not designed for anything bigger, and that is where a couple spends most of their time.

Where couples get it wrong

Two mistakes. The first is taking something large because it looks safer, then spending the week reversing out of lanes. The second is taking the very smallest option and then discovering that two large suitcases plus beach gear do not fit in the boot. Measure the luggage, not the bravado.

What it means for the car

Engine size is rarely the deciding factor on Phuket. Nothing here is a mountain pass in the alpine sense; the climbs are short and steep rather than long.

Ground clearance

This one does matter, and more than people expect. The turnings down to quieter beaches, the last hundred metres to many villas and plenty of side lanes are unsealed, rutted, or have a steep lip where they join the road. A low car scrapes; a crossover does not notice.

After rain

Those same surfaces change completely after a downpour. Ruts fill, edges soften, and what was a firm track becomes a guess. If your accommodation is at the end of one, take the higher car and stop thinking about it.

Families: minivan or crossover

For four people, a crossover is usually the balance point: a proper boot, a higher seating position on the coast road, and dimensions that still fit ordinary parking.

For five or more, or four with a pushchair, a minivan is the honest answer. The extra row is the point, and the flat floor makes loading children much easier than climbing into a high-sided vehicle.

Child seats

Two child seats side by side take more width than people expect, and they turn a five-seat car into a three-adult-and-two-children car at best. Tell us how many seats you need before the class is chosen.

Doors

Sliding rear doors, where available, are a real advantage in tight car parks with a child in your arms. It sounds like a detail and it is a daily one.

Surfers and long-distance drivers

Boards, diving gear, camping equipment and anything long need either a pickup bed or a vehicle with folding rear seats and a flat load area. Say what you are carrying and its length, because this is the one requirement that cannot be improvised on the day.

Distant places

If your plans include the mainland, prioritise motorway comfort: quiet at speed, cold air conditioning and decent tyres. Also confirm before you book that your cover extends off the island, because it does not always.

A long drive with a full car is where a slightly larger engine finally earns its keep. That is the one scenario on this list where it does.

• Count people first, then measure luggage, then look at the hills
