Petrol Stations in Phuket: How to Fill Up and What It Costs
Petrol stations on the island are frequent and most of them are open around the clock, but a couple of things differ from what you may be used to: an attendant does the filling, there are several grades of petrol, and cards are not accepted everywhere. A short guide so your first fill-up goes smoothly.

The PTT, Bangchak and Shell chains are all over the island, open long hours and often around the clock on the highway. At the station an attendant will come to you: say the fuel grade and the amount, or ask for a full tank with the word full.
Gasohol is petrol with an ethanol blend and is cheaper than plain 95. Its different grades suit different engines, which is why the sticker on the flap matters: put in the wrong fuel and the problem is yours to pay for.
At the big chains you can pay in cash or by card. At small roadside stations there may be no card terminal — keep some cash on you, especially heading north or towards Phang Nga.
Diesel turns up in pickups and off-roaders such as the Ford Ranger and Isuzu. Mixing up the pump is easy, because the nozzles stand side by side and the labels are in Thai. Look at the colour and ask the attendant.
It is customary to return the car with the same fuel level you received it with. Do not leave the fill-up right before the airport until the last minute in the morning: a queue of departing travellers builds up there.
How filling up works
You pull up to the pump and an attendant comes over. There is no need to get out and pick up the nozzle — that is their job.
What to say
The simplest thing is to name an amount or say full. The attendant can see the grade on the filler flap, but it is better to say it yourself: on some cars the sticker is worn.
You pay after filling, usually at the pump. A receipt is given on request.

What else you find at a petrol station
The larger stations double as a stop on the road: a shop, coffee, toilets, sometimes a cafe. On long drives across the island they are the most convenient places for a break.
Air and water
Most stations have a tyre inflator, usually free. If the car starts to feel different, check the pressure straight away — in the heat it changes more noticeably than in a temperate climate.
Car washes are common too, and after the rainy season that is not a luxury.
