Parking in Phuket: Where You Can, Where They Tow
Parking in Phuket is free almost everywhere, and the hard part is not the money but finding a space and not leaving the car where it will be towed. There is one simple rule: read the kerb. Here are the markings, the areas, and what to do on the slopes.

In Patong the spaces along the seafront are gone by lunchtime. What works is the roof of the Jungceylon shopping centre and the side streets closer to the hill: a five-minute walk from there, but the car stands safely with no risk of the tow truck.
In Karon and Kata the parking along the beach is free and nearly always available, except on weekend evenings. At Kata Noi there is little room because of the narrow road — arrive early or leave the car further up the slope.
Bang Tao, Rawai and Chalong cause no trouble: wide streets, free verges, big car parks at the supermarkets. That is one reason why living with a car is easier in the south and in Laguna.
Car parks at the temples, the viewpoints and the Big Buddha are free, but in season they fill by ten in the morning. Come either early or closer to sunset, when the coach groups leave.
An empty space where everything around is taken almost certainly means a prohibition or somebody driveway. Check the kerb and look around: if not one local car has parked there, there is a reason.
Kerb markings: the one rule you need
The colour of the kerb in Phuket tells you more than the signs do. A yellow and white stripe means no stopping — a car left there is not simply fined but taken away by a tow truck, and you collect it from the pound.
A red and white kerb
Also a prohibition, usually where parking would block traffic or an exit. For the driver the difference from yellow and white is purely theoretical: you cannot stop in either.
No marking at all means you may park, as long as you are not in anybody way and not blocking an exit. That is the most common case on side streets.

How parking works area by area
Karon is the best area in the south for parking: a long row of free spaces runs along the seafront, and even in high season a free one turns up within a couple of hundred metres.
The tight areas
Kata and Patong are the opposite. Narrow streets, dense building, spaces by the beach taken from the morning. A simple rule works here: do not look for a space by the water, park further up the street and walk five minutes.
Bang Tao, Chalong and the north are roomy. The shopping centres, supermarkets and most beaches have their own car parks, free and large.
Rawai and Nai Harn are in between: there are spaces on the seafront and by the beach, but in season they fill up in the evening.

Parking on a slope
On the west coast and in the south there are many houses on hills, and parking there is always on a gradient. Leave the car in gear and on the handbrake at the same time — on an automatic, in P plus the handbrake.
Wheels to the kerb
The standard trick, and in the hills of Phuket it genuinely saves you: facing downhill turn the wheels towards the kerb, facing uphill away from it. If the car moves, it stops against the kerb rather than rolling away.
Villa driveways are narrow with nowhere to turn around. Reversing in is usually easier than reversing out later.
What to do if the car has been towed
First make sure it really was towed and not stolen: look at the markings where you parked and at any signs nearby.

Call us. The car is registered to the rental company, and dealing with the pound is simpler through us: we know where cars from a given area are taken and which documents are needed.
You can collect the car the same day. It is annoying and it costs money, but it is not a disaster — the main thing is not to delay, because storage is charged by the day.
