Patong is the busiest area on the island: three streets along the beach hold the nightlife, the shopping centre and half of all the taxis in Phuket. You need a car here not to move around the area, but to get out of it.
We bring the car to your hotel and collect it from the same place. If you land at night, we will meet you at the airport — from there it is forty-five minutes to Patong on a good road.
How the roads out of Patong work
Patong sits in a hollow between hills, so every road out of it climbs. North, towards Kamala and Surin, runs the pass: a long ascent with a couple of sharp bends — slippery in the rain, but the asphalt is good.
South, to Karon and Kata, runs the second winding road, shorter and steeper. Every tour bus takes it too, so in the morning you will crawl behind them all the way to the viewpoint.
The third way out is the straight road to Phuket Town through Kathu. It has no climbs, but by six in the evening it jams: this is the only route for everyone heading from the west coast into town.

Where to park and where they tow
The colour of the kerb is the main sign. Red and white means no stopping: the tow truck works in Patong in the evenings and clears cars off the seafront regularly. Yellow and white allows a brief stop; plain grey means you can park.
Along the beach the spaces are paid and gone by lunchtime. The calmest option is the roof of the Jungceylon shopping centre: there are always spaces, the car stands in the shade, and Bangla Road is a ten-minute walk away.
The second option is the side streets closer to the hill, above Rat-U-Thit. They are free but narrow: if your car is bigger than a saloon, drive one block further.
Which car you need in Patong
For the town an economy car is enough: a short body squeezes into the lanes more easily, consumption is low, parking is simpler. A Mazda 2, Nissan Almera or Suzuki Swift is the typical choice for people staying in Patong and driving out to the nearby beaches.
An SUV makes sense if you drive north to Kamala and Surin every day, or if you are staying on the hill above town. The climbs there are short but steep: a saloon with four passengers and luggage labours on the way up, especially after a downpour.
A minivan is awkward in Patong because of parking, but if there are five of you with suitcases there is no choice — in that case plan for the shopping centre roof or the hotel car park from the start.

Traffic and what a newcomer should know
Traffic drives on the left, and the flow around Patong is dense at any hour. Scooters run in a solid ribbon on both sides and overtake where you do not expect them.
Indicators are rarely used here, so watch the wheels of the car next to you rather than its lights. Change lanes early and do not count on being let in.
In the evening Bangla Road is closed to traffic and the navigation app sends you around. That is normal: just add fifteen minutes to any trip after eight in the evening.
Where it is easy to drive from Patong
The nearest beaches, Freedom and Trisara, are twenty minutes away with almost no public transport going there: the car pays for itself in one trip. The viewpoint above Patong opens up after a ten-minute climb.
Going south, an hour gets you to Promthep Cape for the sunset, and you can stop in Rawai for seafood on the way. Going north: Kamala, Surin and Bang Tao with the restaurants of Boat Avenue.
Longer trips — Phang Nga and Khao Lak — take a day each way. Take a bigger car for those: the road rises and falls, and people overtake into oncoming traffic.
