A deposit is a refundable sum that covers the risks on the car. The main rule is simple: the terms are agreed before the car is delivered, not over the bonnet. Here is what it is for, what can be deducted from it, and why you should never leave your passport as security.

A cash deposit is convenient because the sum is known in advance and comes back the moment you hand the car over. The downside is that you have to withdraw the cash and carry it, and the exchange rate takes a bite out of it twice.
A hold on a card looks more civilised, but the money stays frozen for up to a week after the return, sometimes longer. Check in advance how much is held and when it is released — that belongs in the contract, not in a conversation.
The amount depends on the class: less for a city saloon, noticeably more for an SUV or a premium car. If the car has full insurance with no excess, the deposit is usually lower — the rental firm is risking less.
Never hand over your passport, under any circumstances. The leave the document, we will give it back at the return practice exists at small firms, but under Thai law you are required to carry identification, and without it any check turns into an ordeal.
Getting the deposit back depends on the condition of the car. Photograph it from every side at collection and at return, wheels and windscreen included — most disputes come from scratches that were there before you.
What the deposit is for
It covers the owner risks: damage, camera fines that arrive later, missing equipment. It is not a prepayment and not a hidden part of the price — the sum comes back.

The car is handed to someone with no local registration for a day or more. A deposit is the mechanism that balances that trust.

Without your passport you cannot check into a hotel, contact your consulate, or leave the country. Any dispute instantly turns into blackmail, and you are left without documents in a foreign country.

What is deducted and how the refund works
Deductions cover the cost of actual damage, fines that arrived for the rental period, and missing equipment from the inventory.
Normal wear
What is not deducted: small scuffs, tyre wear from ordinary use, paint faded by the sun. The line between wear and damage is talked through at the inspection.
Photographing the car
At handover we record the condition together — every side of the body, the interior, the fuel level. That protects both sides and makes the refund quick and undisputed.
