Where the apps work and where they do not

The density of cars across the island is uneven. The airport, Patong, Karon, Kata, Bang Tao and Phuket Town are covered properly: a car comes quickly and the route builds itself. North beyond Mai Khao, the eastern villages, Panwa and the inland settlements are another story, because a driver going there knows he is coming back empty.

Evening and rain break the system in the same way. The moment a downpour starts, free cars are taken within minutes and the price climbs with demand. That is precisely the moment people understand why having your own car on the island matters.

Why this concerns you as a driver

Because you share the road with them. An app driver stops where the passenger is waiting, not where there is a lay by: mid lane, at a junction, on the slip road off a bridge. Keep your distance and do not cut past a car that has slowed for no visible reason, because it is almost certainly picking somebody up.

What it means for your car and your route

In the narrow streets of Patong and the Old Town these cars create a jam out of nothing. One stops, the second goes round it into oncoming traffic, the third reverses, and the street is blocked. If you are driving through it, the sensible move is to wait rather than to improvise: reversing in a stream of scooters ends in a scrape more often than not.

At shopping centres and piers there are marked lanes reserved for app pickups. It is best not to enter them even for a minute, because you will be asked to leave and, with a queue behind you, there will be nowhere to turn.

The airport is its own case. The app pickup area sits away from the terminal, and drivers of rental cars wander into it out of habit and then look for the way out. If you are collecting somebody yourself, what you want is the ordinary car park, not the taxi lane.

When a taxi is cheaper than renting

For somebody staying in Patong who never goes further than the next beach along. As soon as a market, a viewpoint or a park in the north joins the plan, the number of trips starts climbing and the freedom starts falling.

Running both a rental and apps in the same week

The combination is common: a car for the week, and the app for the evening out. It works, as long as you decide in advance where your own car will stand all night.

Hotel parking is the simplest answer, and a supervised car park is the second. Leaving a rental overnight on a street in the centre of Patong is the version that produces the awkward conversation at handover.

Write the car park down or drop a pin before you leave it. Coming back in the small hours to an unfamiliar district and trying to remember which side street the car is on is a poor end to an evening.

About alcohol and driving

The rule is short: if you have been drinking, you do not drive. The police check drivers in the evenings and around the festivals, and insurance does not work in any part if the driver was drunk at the time of a collision. Those evenings are exactly what the apps are for.

Local taxi ranks and how not to walk into a conflict

Some beaches and markets have their own local taxi and songthaew ranks, and app cars are not welcomed there. Passengers are asked to walk round to the next street, and that is ordinary practice rather than a forum legend.

This touches a rental driver from one direction only: do not take spaces at those ranks. The markings are theirs, and an empty area at a beach entrance is almost always somebody's place of work.

Conflicts are settled the same way every time, by not arguing and driving off. An argument on a verge in a foreign country is a losing position even when you are right.

The practical version is to park where visitors park. Beach car parks, shopping centre floors and hotel spaces are unambiguous, and nothing about them requires you to guess whose ground you are standing on.

When your own car beats the app

It wins in three ordinary situations. The first is evening rain, when there are no free cars at any price. The second is distant points, the viewpoints, the north of the island, the piers for the early boats, where a taxi arrives expensively and you then spend an hour finding one for the way back. The third is children and luggage, because a child seat in an app car is rare.

It loses in the centre of Patong in high season. Parking there becomes a quest, and a trip of two blocks takes longer than the walk.

The practical arrangement is a car for the whole stay for the island, and the apps for evenings in bars and the centre. That way you are not paying for a taxi to sit idle and not searching for a space outside a crowded club.

One more thing worth knowing before your first evening: getting a car back from a distant district late at night is the hard direction. Reaching a quiet beach for sunset is easy; leaving it at ten o'clock is the part people underestimate.
