A minivan solves what a saloon cannot: five people with luggage and a pushchair do not fit into an ordinary car, and two taxis a week eat the rental budget.
On most models the third row folds down and the boot becomes deep. We fit child seats in advance — tell us the age of the child and we will pick the right one.
In the narrow streets of Patong a minivan is on the large side, but along the west coast road and on runs out to Phang Nga it holds the road steadily, and the air conditioning reaches the back seats.
At handover, check that the rear air conditioning works and how the third row folds. In minivans those are the two things most often out of order.
Parking is the one difficulty of this class. Large shopping centres have bays for long cars, but near the beaches in high season you will have to park further away and walk.
When a minivan is the right call

Some private entrances on the slopes are built for a passenger car: a long body either will not go in or goes in with difficulty. That has to be sorted out before delivery, not with your suitcases at the gate.
Fuel
A minivan drinks noticeably more. On a short rental the difference is minor; over a month it is felt.
