When the third row actually earns its place

The maths is simple. Five adults fit into an ordinary saloon on paper only. On a four-hour loop around the island, in the heat, with the air conditioning fighting the sun, the middle passenger in the back is having a bad day and everyone knows it. A third row turns that same trip into something people talk about afterwards for the right reasons.

Families with children

The second case is two parents, two children in seats and a grandparent. That is five people on paper and two bulky child seats in reality. Child seats take width, not just a spot, so the back bench that theoretically holds three holds two and a squeeze. A seven-seater gives everyone a proper place and the luggage still has somewhere to go.

Who does not need it: a couple, or a family with one child. In that setup the third row lives permanently folded and you are simply driving a bigger car through Patong's back streets for no reason.

What it means for the car

The defining feature of any seven-seater is the fight between passengers and bags. With the third row up, the boot is a shelf, not a boot. Two cabin cases and a few beach bags is honestly the limit. Anyone who tells you otherwise has not tried it with surfboards and a pushchair.

Three ways. Bags on laps in the back works for a short hop and nothing longer. Roof storage is rare here. The workable answer is planning: arrival and departure are the heavy-luggage days, and in between the third row goes up and the boot goes back to being a boot.

On the hill roads of the west coast a fully loaded seven-seater feels noticeably heavier than an empty one. That is normal, not a fault. Drop a gear on the climbs, leave more room on the descents, and keep the air conditioning working rather than the engine.

Size

A seven-seater is longer and taller than a standard car. You feel it parking in Patong and Kata, and you feel it again at the barrier of an underground car park with a height limit. Nothing dramatic, but reverse in rather than nose in, and pick the far end of the car park instead of the row by the entrance.

Child seats on the island

Child seats are not part of a rental by default anywhere in Phuket. They are brought on request, which means asking when you book rather than when the car arrives. Say the child's age and rough weight and the right seat comes with the car, already clean.

Fitting

Most cars here have proper anchor points, but not every seat and every car agree the first time. Fit it while the car is still outside your hotel and the person delivering it is still there. Two minutes then saves a roadside argument later.

A booster for an older child is a different item from an infant carrier. Ask for the one you actually need. If you are travelling with two children at different ages, say so, because two seats side by side change which row you want them in.

If your group is five or more, take the seven-seater even for a short stay. If it is four with mountains of gear, take a crossover instead and keep the boot. The line is people, not luggage.

Cars that suit this

The seven-seaters that work well here are the tall minivan shapes rather than the stretched crossovers with a token bench in the back. Head room in the third row matters more than badges: an adult should be able to sit there for an hour without folding.

For a family with small children, prioritise sliding rear doors if you can get them. In a tight Phuket car park a sliding door is the difference between loading a child comfortably and apologising to the car next to you.
