Which car suits a stay in Layan?

For the beach itself any ordinary car will do: the main northern road is wide, even and fast, and the branches to the sea are short. Where you sleep matters more than where you swim. Villas on the slopes towards Layan are reached by short, steep driveways up to the gates, and pulling away uphill on a hot concrete ramp with a full car is where an SUV earns its place.

How far is Layan from everything?

By the OSRM route planner, Layan beach is about 15 km and 19 minutes from Phuket Airport, about 6 km and 10 minutes from Boat Avenue in Cherng Talay, and about 26 km and 33 minutes from Patong.

Finding the way to Layan

The road is easy; the turning is the hard part. The branches to Layan look almost identical, a narrow lane disappearing into greenery with a small sign, so mark the point in the navigation app before you set off. Drive it from the south: heading north, every turn to the sea is a left turn, and you never cut across the oncoming traffic.

Fuel and parking near Layan

There are no fuel stations at the northern beaches, so fill up in Cherng Talay on the way. At the end of the branches the tarmac turns into sand: stop the car on the firm side and walk the rest, because rental cars have no all-wheel drive and loose sand holds an economy car and a crossover equally well. Park away from coconut palms.

When to drive to the beach at Layan

Go in the morning: the light is better, the heat has not built and the northern road is calm. In the wet season the open water brings serious swell and red flags mean exactly what they say, and in heavy rain the narrow side lanes have soft verges and pools of unreadable depth, so leave them for a dry day.
