Ford here means two large cars: the Ranger pickup with an open bed and the Everest, a seven-seat SUV with four-wheel drive. People pick them for rough driveways, surf and dive gear, and long drives off the island.
Ford: big cars for rough roads and long trips
Ford is where the large cars are. The Ranger is a pickup with high clearance, for people who carry gear, drive down dirt tracks to remote beaches or just want to sit high above the traffic. The Everest is a full-size SUV built on the same base, with room for a family and luggage, a good fit for a road trip to Khao Sok or Krabi.
Both are big for Patong: parking in the centre takes patience, and the narrow lanes of Phuket Town are tight. If you need space but stay in town, a Toyota Veloz or a Honda BR-V is easier to live with. If you are heading off the asphalt or across the bridge to the mainland for several days, look at Ford first.

Can I rent a pickup truck in Phuket as a tourist?
Yes. The Ford Ranger is the pickup in our booking search, rented on the same papers as any car: passport, national licence and an International Driving Permit. People take it for the clearance and the bed.
Concrete driveways to hillside villas in Kata and Kamala scrape the nose of a low car, and some access roads in the north turn to ruts after a night of rain. Boards and diving bags go in the open bed, wet and sandy, away from the seats. Four adults with suitcases is the weak spot: the rear seats of a double cab are upright, and the luggage rides outside.

Ranger or Everest for Khao Sok and Cheow Lan Lake?
For a family with luggage, the Ford Everest: a seven-seat SUV with a 2.0-litre diesel engine, four-wheel drive and a closed body, so the bags stay inside and dry in a downpour on the way north. The Ranger suits two or three people with gear.
Both cross the Sarasin bridge without trouble. Put the route in the chat before you leave, so the insurance covers the mainland. The gearbox of the Everest is not in our fleet table and is confirmed for the specific car.

Who can drive a Ford Everest, and where is it hard work?
Premium cars and large SUVs need a driver aged 23 or older, and the Everest is in the premium class. Every driver goes into the agreement by name, so if two adults will share the wheel on the road to Krabi, send photos of both sets of documents when you book.
The Everest is wide for Patong: parking in the centre takes patience. If seven seats are the only reason for the big car and you stay on asphalt, a Toyota Veloz or a Honda BR-V is easier to live with.

Does a Ford Ranger have a closed boot?
No, the luggage rides in the open bed. Keep suitcases and valuables in the cabin; if bags must stay dry and out of sight, the Everest has a closed body.
For a drive from Phuket to Khao Sok, is a small hatchback enough or should I get a 4×4?
The main road to Khao Sok is asphalt, so the drive itself does not need a 4×4. Take the Everest or the Ranger for dirt tracks to a lodge or a lot of luggage; two people on the main road do fine in a sedan with a bigger engine, such as the Honda Civic.
Is a Ford Ranger hard to park in Patong?
In the centre, yes: a pickup is long for the narrow streets near the beach. A hotel with its own car park makes it easy.
