Insurance When Renting a Car in Thailand
A rental car always comes with insurance; the question is where the cover ends. Here is what it covers, when it stops applying, and how it differs from your travel medical policy.

Compulsory insurance in Thailand covers harm to third parties, not your car. It is the minimum that every car on the road carries, and it is not enough.
Beyond that comes voluntary insurance, which rental firms call by different names. The key question is one: what is the excess. If it is a substantial sum, you pay for a scraped bumper yourself and the insurance only comes in for serious damage.
Ask separately what is excluded. Typical exclusions: damage to the underbody and the wheel rims, damage while driving on dirt roads, driving without a valid licence, and cases where the person at the wheel was not on the contract.
Scooters are insured differently and usually worse. If you are planning both a car and a scooter, go through the terms for each separately — you cannot carry the logic from one to the other.
Whatever happens, call the rental company first and the police second. Without a police report the insurer almost always refuses, even when the other party is obviously at fault.
What the car insurance covers
Basic cover comes with the car and applies to damage in an accident — both to the car and to third parties.
What it does not cover
Personal belongings in the car, your own medical treatment, and the consequences of offences such as driving without a licence. Your health is covered by your travel policy — a separate document, arranged at home.
The limits of the cover are talked through when you sign: it matters to understand them before the trip, not after.
When the insurance stops applying
Three cases, and all of them are avoidable.
A driver without a licence
No international permit means the person at the wheel had no right to drive. The insurer refuses.
An unlisted driver
If somebody who is not on the contract takes the wheel, the result is the same. A second driver has to be added in advance.
Alcohol
It removes the cover entirely and moves the situation into criminal territory. The limit in Thailand is zero.
- An international permit for everyone who drives
- Every driver written into the contract
- Zero alcohol
- After an accident: police and photographs, without them there is no claim
ВажноTravel medical insurance and car insurance are different things. The first covers your health, the second damage to the car and to third parties. You need both.
What to do if something happens
Do not move the car unless it is blocking traffic. Photograph the position of the vehicles, the damage, the number plates and the wider scene.
Wait for the police: without a report there is no claim. Call us — we get involved in sorting it out and we know the procedure.
Do not settle on the spot with the other party without the police: verbal agreements do not work when the claim is filed.
