How do you plan a road trip from Phuket?

Loops, not lines. Phuket hangs off the mainland by one bridge, so you go out over it and, sooner or later, come back the same way. What changes is how far the loop reaches. A day? Phang Nga. Two or three nights? Add Krabi. A full week gets you Khao Sok and the Gulf coast too.

Short and long versions

What that means for the car

Petrol, not electric. That's the one hard rule once you leave the island: chargers get scarce fast on the mainland, while a fuel station is never far from the highway. All our cars are automatics, which you'll appreciate somewhere around hour six.

Pick the size for your luggage, not for the roads. The highways are wide and sealed; two people with a couple of bags are perfectly happy in an economy car all the way to Krabi. A family packing for a week, or four friends, will want a crossover or a minivan so the bags go in the boot and not on anyone's knees.

Which stops fit into the loop?

Phang Nga town is about 90 km from the bridge, an hour and a half on the main highway, and the boats into the bay leave from Tha Dan pier. Khao Lak is about the same distance north; it is a resort strip spread along 20 km of highway rather than one place, so decide which end you are heading for.

Krabi is about 160 km from Phuket Town to Ao Nang, roughly three hours at an unhurried pace, and slower only for people who leave after nine and meet the queue before the bridge. Khao Sok lies deep inland; our rule for it is to stay the night, since as a day trip it means leaving before dawn and returning after dark.

Surat Thani sits near Donsak pier, about 270 km and four hours from Phuket. There is no road to Samui: the car takes the ferry for the last leg, about an hour and a half, and vehicle space is limited, so book it ahead.

Can I drive from Phuket to Bangkok or Malaysia?

Bangkok is about 850 km, twelve to thirteen hours of driving before stops, and an overnight in Chumphon or Hua Hin splits it roughly in half. The practical question is where the car ends up: leaving it in another province is not something to assume from a booking form. Ask in chat before you book; when a mainland drop-off is not possible, the working plan is a round trip back to Phuket.

Malaysia is a bigger step again. A border crossing in a rental car is answered for your dates in chat before booking, never decided on the road. If it cannot be arranged, the version that works is a loop through southern Thailand with the car returned on the island.

How long should each driving day be?

We suggest about two hours in one direction as the sensible limit for a day trip, and longer legs only when you sleep at the other end. The highways are easy; fatigue and the afternoon rain are what make the last hour hard. Plan to arrive before dark, because rural roads off the highway are unlit and scooters appear without lights.
