The area by the pier is large, but in the morning it fills with cars and tour minibuses and the two-wheeler space gets squeezed. If you are heading out on a boat, arrive earlier than feels necessary and use the marked bike area rather than a gap between vehicles that will be gone when you return.
Around the temple and the shops, there are proper two-wheeler areas and they are rarely full. Use them — a scooter left across a shop entrance in a busy district gets moved by someone, and it will not be moved gently.
Overnight, keep the bike off the street where you can. Chalong is an ordinary residential area rather than a difficult one, but a scooter parked in a marked bay behind a gate survives the night more reliably than one left at the kerb.
Where it is easy to ride from Chalong
Rawai and Nai Harn are the nearest beaches and the ride to them is short and flat, which makes them the natural everyday destination. The road is straightforward, there is parking at both, and the round trip takes very little out of a day.
Kata and Karon are the other direction, over the hill. It is a proper climb with bends, and a small scooter with one rider handles it fine while the same bike with two people and shopping works considerably harder. Take it slowly and use both brakes on the way back down.
Phuket Town is a straight run north on a busy road, and it is the trip to time carefully — pleasant in the middle of the morning, unpleasant at the end of the working day. The east-coast route towards Panwa is quieter and more interesting if you are not in a hurry.

A motorcycle category on your licence and the matching International Driving Permit are required, and in Chalong they are checked as often as anywhere on the island. Carry them with your passport, as originals — a photograph on a phone is not accepted at a post.
