Traffic to Rawai, Kata, Phuket Town and the north all passes through the Chalong roundabout. That is convenient and inconvenient at once: you can get anywhere, but at rush hour the roundabout stands still.
The infrastructure here is grown-up: supermarkets, garages, gyms, muay thai schools, clinics. People staying long-term need a car every day, and they usually take one for a month straight away.
Parking is free and available almost everywhere — a rarity on this island. It gets tight by the pier on boat days, but a space always turns up.
The Big Buddha is ten minutes up the winding road. The road is good but the gradient is real: in summer older cars overheat on it, so keep an eye on the temperature.
Why Chalong works well with a car
Every road in the south meets at the Chalong roundabout. From here the west coast beaches, Rawai, the town and the airport highway are all equally close. If you plan to drive around the island a lot, this is the best base in terms of time on the road.
The second advantage is the infrastructure for drivers: petrol stations, tyre shops, garages and large supermarkets sit along the main roads rather than hiding in side lanes.
The roads and the main roundabout
The Chalong roundabout is the busiest junction in the south. All the through traffic passes it, and at rush hour it is dense. The rule is simple: whoever is entering gives way to whoever is already on it, and you look right.
West of the roundabout the road goes to Kata and Karon over the hill, south to Rawai and Nai Harn, north to the airport highway and Phuket Town.
A separate road leads up to the Big Buddha: a long winding climb with several steep sections. It is a good road, but the descent can be slippery in the rainy season.

Parking
There is a large area at the pier where people leave their cars for the day while they are out at the islands. You almost always find a space, though it gets tight in the morning at the height of the season.
At the supermarkets and shops along the road parking is free and roomy. In residential blocks people park outside their houses, but it is narrow there — do not block a neighbour driveway.

Which car suits
Chalong is an area of flat roads and long runs, so consumption and comfort on the highway matter more than size. An economy car copes with everything, including the climb to the Buddha.
SUVs are taken by people who drive the west coast over the hills a lot, and by families with luggage. A minivan is handy for group trips to the pier with gear — there is room to park there.
For a long rental from a month an economy car wins clearly: mileage from Chalong adds up fast, and the fuel difference over a month is real.

Where to drive from Chalong
The first reason people come here is the pier. Boats to Coral, Racha and the further islands leave in the morning, and a car lets you arrive at your own time rather than the transfer schedule.
The second is Wat Chalong and the Big Buddha. Both are fifteen minutes away and fit into one evening together with the sunset at the viewpoint.
Phuket Town with the Old Town is twenty minutes on the highway. It is the best evening out: narrow streets of Portuguese-era buildings, markets and cafes, and an empty road home.
