A Convertible in Phuket: Worth It or Not
A convertible on this island works for exactly two hours a day — early in the morning and after sunset, when the sun no longer burns and the rain has not yet arrived. The rest of the time the roof is up and you are driving an ordinary car with a small boot.

How an open car behaves in the tropics
The first drive with the roof down is almost always a delight. Warm air, the smell of the sea, a view not through glass — on the winding road up to the viewpoints it really is a different feeling of the road.
By day the picture changes. The sun here stands almost vertically, there is no shade at all in an open car, and after fifteen minutes you put the roof up not for the look of it but to avoid burning. The air conditioning is then working at its limit: the cabin has had time to bake while the top was down.
Downpours
Rain on the island begins without a prelude. Less than a minute passes between the first drops and a wall of water, and the roof does not fold instantly and usually not on the move. So you have to stop somewhere it is possible to stop — and on a winding road that is not easy.
There is a third thing nobody thinks about in advance: noise. With the top down on the highway, conversation in the car is almost impossible, music comes in snatches, and you have to put the navigation on the screen because the voice is lost in the airflow. Over twenty minutes along the sea it does not bother you at all; over an hour across the island it bothers you noticeably.
What that means for the car
The folding roof eats the boot entirely. Even with the top up, the compartment for it does not go anywhere, and two large suitcases will not fit. For a couple already living here and driving light that does not matter; for the run from the airport it matters immediately.
A body without a roof is more heavily loaded, and on an uneven driveway up to a villa an open car creaks more audibly. It has nothing to do with breaking down and everything to do with how the car feels.
The interior and the sun
A leather seat that has stood for an hour in an open car park with the top down will not let you sit on it. A cover in a car like this is not an accessory but a necessity, and leaving it open at the beach is not worth it even for half an hour.

Who this class does not suit
A family with children. The rear row in most open cars is symbolic, a child seat fits badly, and nothing shields the back from the sun.
Anyone arriving with suitcases and staying far from the airport. The very first drive will show that the luggage travels on your knees.
Anyone who has taken a villa in the hills with a steep entrance. A low body and a concrete climb with a lip is the combination that has you approaching your own house sideways.
And anyone planning to drive every day in the rainy season. Not because the car is bad, but because it will be open exactly as many times as fit into the gaps between downpours.
The season decides more than the model
From November to March the island is dry, downpours are rare and short, and the sea breeze is moderate. That is the only stretch of the year when the top comes down not as an exception but as an ordinary way to drive — at least in the morning and the evening.
In the rainy season the logic changes. Rain arrives daily and almost to a schedule, the roads stay wet longer than the water falls, and planning a drive with the roof down is like planning a picnic on a week-old forecast. That does not make the car worse; you are simply paying for a possibility you do not use.
Wind and swell
In bad weather the west coast meets you with a crosswind, and in an open car it feels nothing like it does in a closed one. On the straight stretches along the sea it adds work at the wheel, especially in a light body.
Where to park an open car
The rules are the same as for any car: the kerb colour decides everything, red and white means no, black and white allows parking. The difference is elsewhere — you want to put an open car in the shade, and there is little shade by the beaches.
Covered parking at a shopping centre or a hotel is worth more to a convertible than being close to the sea. Half an hour in the sun turns the cabin into an oven, and for the first few minutes afterwards you drive standing on the air conditioning rather than enjoying the view.

When a convertible really is good
A short period and a specific occasion. A couple of days in the dry season, evening runs up to the viewpoints, the coast road at sunset — here the open top delivers everything expected of it.
It also works well as a second decision: a main car for the whole holiday and a convertible for the weekend, when you want to drive rather than to carry things.
