Nai Harn rewards a small car
Most driving here is short: the beach, Rawai for dinner, Promthep for the sunset. On those trips the size of the car matters more than its power, because the best corners of the south are reached by narrow roads with little space at the end.
The climbs out of the bay are no reason to rent bigger. Any car in good order takes them; what they ask for is a low gear on the way down. The exception is a villa high on the slope with a steep driveway, where SUV hire in Nai Harn is worth the difference.
Ya Nui and Ao Sane are small-car coves
Ya Nui, the small bay below Promthep Cape, is reached by a steep, narrow road with limited turning space at the bottom. In a compact car that is a minor manoeuvre; in a long one it can mean reversing back up.
Ao Sane, the rocky cove north-west of Nai Harn Beach, is about 1.5 km away by a narrow road past The Nai Harn resort, and the parking at the end is tight. A small car fits, or you can walk over from Nai Harn.

The lagoon road: flat, quiet and narrow in places
The loop around the lagoon is the easiest driving in the south, flat and calm, and a good place for a first half hour on the left. Parts of the lane are narrow enough that two cars cannot pass, and walkers, cyclists and dogs share the same edge.
In the evening treat it as a walking-pace road. A short car makes it simple to pull into a gap and let the other driver through.
Fill up in Rawai, not in the bay
There is no convenient petrol station in Nai Harn itself. The nearest are in Rawai and out towards Chalong, so filling the tank becomes an errand for the drive home rather than a morning stop. Rawai is about 10 minutes away, and cheap car hire in Rawai is a fair alternative if you would rather live on its flat streets and drive to Nai Harn for the sea.
The same goes for the weekly shop: the bay has restaurants and a couple of small shops, and anything bigger is a drive out. With a car that is part of the routine; without one it becomes a taxi wait at the far end of the island.
