Is there a road to Railay Beach?

No. Railay is cut off by limestone cliffs, and everyone arrives by water. Everyone.

We get this question a lot, usually from people looking at a map where Railay seems to sit right on the Krabi coast. It does. There is just no road into it. So the real question is how far the car takes you, and the answer is Ao Nang, the beach town next door, where the boats to Railay leave from the sand.

The drive itself is simple. Off Phuket by the bridge (the only road off the island), east along the mainland highway, and into Ao Nang for parking. Then a short crossing, and you are on Railay without having driven a metre of it.

Why take a car at all, then? Because the mainland half is where it helps: stops when you want them, cold water in the boot, bags for a night away. On the Railay side you walk anyway.

Is it worth doing in one day?

Honestly, it is a long one. Three hours each way, the boat, a few hours on the sand, and the drive home ends after dark. Most people we talk to end up staying a night in Ao Nang or Krabi and coming back the next afternoon, and they never regret it.

What that means for the car

Any class manages the road, which is sealed and good the whole way. The choice comes down to comfort over six hours. An economy automatic is fine for two; a family with bags for an overnight stay is happier in a crossover with air conditioning that keeps up with the afternoon sun.

Step by step: Phuket to Railay with a rental car

Leave early. The only road off the island is the Sarasin bridge, and people who set off after nine meet the queue that forms before it.

In Ao Nang, park a block inland rather than on the beach road, where the front is busy and stopping is awkward. Take everything you need for the day with you onto the boat.

What about the drive back after dark?

Plan for it, because it comes quickly. There is almost no dusk here: the light goes in about half an hour, and a boat back from Railay in the late afternoon puts you on the highway at nightfall.

The mainland road is a main route, but it is long and the traffic on it is mixed. Lorries, coaches and scooters share it, and scooters often ride with no rear light at all, so you see them later than you expect. Keep a bigger gap than you would at home and do not push a tired drive through the night. A large highway station is a good place for coffee and ten minutes out of the seat.

Back on Phuket, stay on the lit main roads to your hotel and leave hill short cuts for daylight. If the plan with the boat and the beach runs late, it is simply easier to book a room in Ao Nang and drive home in the morning with fresh eyes.

Railay, Krabi or Khao Lak: which trip suits a car?

Railay suits a car the least of the three, because the car waits while you are on the beach. Krabi town and Ao Nang are the places where it earns its keep, with stops on the way and freedom to move along the coast. Khao Lak goes the other way, north on Highway 4 after the bridge, and there the car is useful every day because the beaches are spread out along the road.
