How a long rental differs from a holiday one
On a holiday rental you are buying a week of mobility and everything is measured in outings. On a long rental you are buying daily life. The trips are shorter and duller: school, the market, the gym, a friend's place, the immigration office. You drive less far and far more often.
What follows from that
Three things. First, comfort in traffic beats performance on a hill road, because you will spend your time in the former. Second, parking size matters enormously, because you park at the same awkward place every single day. Third, servicing stops being theoretical: a car doing daily kilometres for months will need attention while you have it, and on a long term that is the owner's job, not yours.
What it means for the car
Long-term cars are chosen for durability rather than novelty. Air conditioning that holds up in traffic, a gearbox that is not tired, tyres with real tread left: these are the things that decide whether the next few months are pleasant.
What stays with you
Fuel, cleanliness, tolls and parking are yours. Scheduled servicing, oil, filters and tyre wear are the owner's. If a warning light comes on, you tell us and we sort it out; you do not book a garage yourself and you do not pay for it.
Salt and corrosion

The wet season
If your stay covers the wet months, this is the period that tests the car. Wipers, tyre tread and door seals all matter more than they did in dry weather. Standing water on the main roads collects in strips along the kerb and pulls the car sideways at speed, so keep to the inner lane and slow earlier than instinct suggests.
A car also changes how the rainy season feels. Scooter life stops being fun the moment the weather turns, and the people who enjoy those months are usually the ones with four wheels and a working air conditioner.
Cars that suit this
For a couple staying a season in a town district, a compact automatic is almost always right. It is cheap to run, painless to park, and nothing about island driving asks for more.
A family, or anyone living up a hill lane, is better served by a crossover: more boot, better clearance for the unsealed last hundred metres, and calmer on the climbs with a full car.
A scooter alongside
